Daxi Old Tea Factory: A Reflection of Century-Old Tea Culture In 1899, Mitsui & Co. ventured into the tea industry in Taiwan and established the Xinshi Tea Factory in the Daxi area of Taoyuan City and Haishan in New Taipei City. Initially, the factory produced oolong and Paochong teas, but during the Showa era, it gradually transformed into a specialist in black tea production. In 1926, the tea factory named "Jiaobanshan Factory" was completed, which is now known as Daxi Old Tea Factory, covering an area of 1,670 ping, hidden away in quiet alleys, serving as a century-old witness to Taiwan's tea culture. The architectural style of this tea factory merges Taiwanese, Japanese, and British elements, with its exterior inspired by the design of the tea factory in Darjeeling, India. The main color "Daxi Blue" is understated and reserved, paired with brick structures and cypress wood frames, showcasing delicate craftsmanship throughout. The factory preserves precious antique tea-making equipment, exuding an enchanting historical ambiance that silently narrates the glorious past of the tea factory. The Golden Age of Black Tea Exports During the golden era of Taiwanese tea exports to Europe and America, Daxi Old Tea Factory witnessed the illustrious history of black tea as "black gold." Since 1926, the factory focused on black tea production, with its sweet and elegant characteristics gaining fame in the London market, ranking alongside Ceylon, Darjeeling, and Keemun black teas as one of the four famous teas in the world. By 1944, Nitto Black Tea monopolized the production and export of Taiwanese black tea, exporting up to 600 tons annually and becoming a significant symbol of Taiwan's tea industry. However, a devastating fire in 1956 nearly destroyed this precious historical memory. Fortunately, under the directive of President Chiang Kai-shek, military engineers assisted in the reconstruction of the factory, allowing it to continue its cultural legacy and transform into a dual carrier of tea culture and historical significance today.
