Bajili Forest Trail Introduction
Before the construction of the Baiji Tunnel, the main access from Daxi to the mountainous areas of Jiao Bantian and Baling was primarily through the Baiji Trail (formerly known as the Shigui Keng Ancient Path), which served as an important transportation artery from the Qing Dynasty through the Japanese colonial period. In 1944, with the opening of the Baiji Tunnel light railway, the Baiji Trail ceased to play its role as a transportation hub. Starting in 1949, Cihu was designated as a military control area, which shrouded the Baiji Trail in mystery for nearly half a century, protecting the local natural ecology from development and destruction. Visiting the Baiji Trail not only offers a baptism of history and culture but also provides an experience of its rich natural scenery. From spring to autumn, one can look for black-winged fireflies and mountain window fireflies, enjoying the peace of the forest as fireflies light up the night; in winter, there are opportunities to encounter common bird species such as the Tawny Owl, Bamboo Partridge, Formosan Blue Magpie, and Grey-throated Marten, which bring endless surprises. The path is adorned with a variety of plants, the most famous being the tung tree flowers, which blanket the winding trails in May, adding a romantic touch. Additionally, one can see azaleas, mountain palms, kidney ferns, pencil trees, and eucalyptus. Various butterflies such as the black swallowtail, common glassycels, bamboo red triangle, and purple lace butterfly can be seen fluttering around. The entire 2.8-kilometer Baiji Trail is a wide asphalt path designed for walking, without the steep gradients typical of ancient trails, making it an age-friendly introductory path suitable for family outings. Visitors can enjoy the primitive mountain forest bath, with phytoncides and negative ions revitalizing the body and mind, offering an ultimate relaxation experience. With a panoramic view of Daxi below, the horizon is boundless, making it a worthwhile trip. The Baiji Trail also connects to other notable attractions such as the Daqiao-chi Ancient Trail and Xizhou Park.
