Bajilinhyn Trail Introduction
Before the construction of the Baiji Tunnel, the route from Daxi to Jiaoban Mountain and Balin in the Fuxing mountainous area was mainly via the Baiji Trail (formerly known as the Shikweikeng Ancient Path), which has been an important transportation route since the Qing Dynasty and through the Japanese colonial period. In 1944, with the opening of the Baiji Tunnel light railway, the Baiji shaded trail ceased to play the role of a transportation hub. Starting in 1949, Cihu was designated as a military control zone, which added a layer of mystery to the Baiji Trail, allowing the local natural ecology to avoid development and destruction for nearly half a century. Visiting the Baiji Trail not only provides a historical and cultural experience but also allows for rich encounters with nature. From spring to autumn, one can look for black-winged fireflies and mountain window fireflies, enjoying the tranquility of the mountains as fireflies twinkle in the dusk; in winter, there are chances to see common bird species such as the Oriental scops owl, bamboo partridge, Taiwan blue magpie, and grey-throated martin, bringing endless surprises. Along the trail, a variety of plants can be found, with the most famous being the tung flower, which sheds snow-like blossoms along the winding forest path in May, adding a romantic touch. Additionally, one can see azaleas, mountain palms, nephrolepis, pencil cedar, and eucalyptus trees, with the black swallowtail, striped tiger, bamboo red ring butterfly, and purple admiral fluttering about. The 2.8-kilometer-long Baiji shaded trail features a wide paved surface, designed solely for pedestrian use, lacking the steep gradients typical of ancient paths, making it an accessible entry-level trail suitable for families. Along the way, enjoy the embrace of the pristine forest, with phytoncides and negative ions awakening the body and mind, providing an ultimate relaxation experience. The trail offers a panoramic view of the Daxi area below, allowing visitors to savor the boundless scenery. The Baiji shaded trail also connects to other distinctive attractions such as the Dajiaxi Ancient Path and Xizhou Park.
