Old Chaozhou Post Office (Pingtung Hakka Arts Museum) Introduction
The Old Chaozhou Post Office is one of the important official buildings in the Chaozhou area during the Japanese colonial period, established around 1897. During that time, the Chaozhou area held significant administrative importance, as it housed the Chaozhou Office and the Chaozhou County Office, which is currently the location of the Chaozhou Township Office. A small part of the county office building still remains, while the rest has been demolished. The Chaozhou Office later became the Chaozhou Post Office, which has recently relocated from this historic building. Due to the introduction of Western urban planning methods during the Japanese colonial period, Chaozhou Street is the only area in Pingtung County, aside from Pingtung City, to have urban planning features such as parks and shrines; however, these shrines and the malaria research institute have been demolished and are no longer visible today. To witness the architecture of official buildings from the Japanese colonial period, only the Old Chaozhou Post Office remains. The preservation of the Old Chaozhou Post Office not only allows us to understand the historical development but also showcases the marks left by urban development in Chaozhou Township. Since 2011, it has been planned as the "Pingtung Opera Story Museum," giving new life to the old building.
