Old Chaozhou Post Office (Pingtung Traditional Theatre Museum) Introduction
The Old Chaozhou Post Office is one of the important government buildings in the Chaozhou area during the Japanese colonial period, established around 1897. The Chaozhou area held significant administrative status during this time, as the Chaozhou Township Office and Chaozhou County Office were located here, which is now the site of the Chaozhou Township Government. Only a small portion of the county office building remains, while the rest has been demolished. The former Chaozhou Township Office later became the Chaozhou Post Office, and in recent years, the post office has relocated from this historic building. Due to the introduction of Western urban planning methods during the Japanese colonial period, Chaozhou Street is the only area in Pingtung, aside from Pingtung City, that features parks and shrines as part of its urban planning. However, these shrines and the malaria research institute can no longer be seen in present-day Pingtung, as they have all been demolished. To witness the architectural style of colonial government buildings, only the Old Chaozhou Post Office remains. The preservation of the Old Chaozhou Post Office not only allows for an understanding of historical development but also showcases the marks left by the urban development of Chaozhou Township. Since 2011, it has been planned as the "Pingtung Traditional Arts Story Museum," giving new life to this old building.
