Old Chaozhou Post Office (Pingtung Traditional Theatre Story Museum) Introduction
The Old Chaozhou Post Office is one of the important government buildings in the Chaozhou area during the Japanese colonial period, established around 1897. During that time, Chaozhou held a significant administrative status, hosting the Chaozhou Township Office and the Chaozhou County Office, which is now the location of the Chaozhou Township Office. Only a small part of the county office building remains, as the rest has been demolished. The Chaozhou Township Office eventually transformed into the Chaozhou Post Office, which has recently relocated to a new site, leaving this historic building behind. Due to the introduction of Western urban planning methods during the Japanese era, Chaozhou Street is the only area in Pingtung County, aside from Pingtung City, that featured urban planning with parks and shrines. However, these shrines and the malaria research institute have been removed, and today in Pingtung, there are no remnants of them. To witness the architectural style of Japanese official buildings, the Old Chaozhou Post Office is currently the last remaining structure. Its preservation not only allows for an understanding of historical development but also showcases the marks left by urban development in Chaozhou Township. Since 2011, it has been planned as the "Pingtung Traditional Theater Story Museum," showcasing a new life for this old building.
