Zhangyuan Introduction
Zhangyuan is located at the northernmost point of the east coast of Taitung County, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east and resting against the East Coast Mountain Range to the west, bordered by Baxian Cave to the south and Changhong Bridge to the north. The area is characterized by its beautiful scenery by the mountains and water. The local residents are predominantly from the Amis indigenous group, with most engaged in farming, labor work, and fishing; the lifestyle is simple and frugal. The most iconic landmark of Zhangyuan Village is the "Zhangyuan Presbyterian Church," which embodies the spirit of Noah's Ark as understood by the local Amis community. Residents voluntarily contributed funds and constructed the church through various means, such as charity sales and gathering wild vegetables and frogs. This building is acclaimed as Taiwan's most beautiful "Noah's Ark" styled church. The structure is surrounded by low walls on either side, resembling a vessel entering Zhangyuan Harbor, safeguarding the local residents. The vibrant red-brick tribal totem on the outer wall symbolizes the enduring spirit of the local indigenous community. Additionally, at the southern end of Zhangyuan Village, there is the "Zhangyuan Bridge," which consists of three bridges—old, middle, and new—arranged in parallel across the Jiumudinding Creek. The varying elevation creates a unique landscape. The East Coast National Scenic Area Administration of the Tourism Bureau has also established a "Zhangyuan Bridge Rest Area" here, allowing visitors to stop on the new bridge and admire the old stone-arched bridge spanning the creek, showcasing a rustic and picturesque natural scene.
