Jiangjun Residence (Meilun River Japanese Dormitory) Introduction

On Zhongzheng Road in Hualien City, by the Meilun River, there is a whole area of Japanese-style wooden dormitories that served as the residences for officers stationed in Hualien during the Japanese colonial period. The well-organized cluster of wooden buildings forms a complete small residential area. Among them, the "General's Residence," built in 1936, was once the official residence of Colonel Nakamura, the highest military commander in the Hualien area. Unlike other paired wooden dormitories, the General's Residence features a standalone design with its own yard and a higher pedestal, indicating its superior status compared to the other dormitories. In recent years, with the efforts of the government and local residents, the General's Residence and the surrounding group of Japanese dormitories have been designated as a county-level historic site. After renovations, it has been opened to the public for visits, with local volunteers providing guided tours to help visitors understand the historical significance of the General's Residence. In addition to its charming architectural appearance, the interior decor of the General's Residence is quite exquisite, featuring Japanese-style tatami rooms and long corridors, with the original cypress wood cabinets also perfectly preserved, exuding a pleasant aroma.
