Jiangjun Mansion (Beilun River Japanese Dormitory) Introduction
At the banks of the Meilun River on Zhongzheng Road in Hualien City, there is a whole area of Japanese-style wooden dormitories, which served as residences for military officers stationed in Hualien during the Japanese colonial period. The neatly arranged wooden buildings form a complete small residential area. Among them, the "General's Residence," built in 1936, was once the official residence of Colonel Nakamura, the highest military commander in the Hualien area. Unlike other duplex wooden dormitories, the General's Residence is designed as a standalone house with its own yard, and its base is higher, indicating its superior status. In recent years, through the efforts of the government and local residents, the General's Residence and the surrounding Japanese dormitory complex have been designated as county-level historical sites. After renovations, they have been opened to the public, with local volunteers providing guided tours to help visitors understand the historical significance of the General's Residence. In addition to the charming exterior of the buildings, the interior decor of the General's Residence is also quite exquisite, featuring traditional Japanese style with tatami rooms and long corridors, and even the cypress wood cabinets used at that time have been retained, exuding a delightful fragrance.
