Jiangjun Mansion (Meilun River Japanese Dormitory) Introduction

On the banks of the Meilun River along Zhongzheng Road in Hualien City, there is a whole area of Japanese-style wooden dormitories that served as residences for military officers stationed in Hualien during the Japanese occupation. This neatly arranged group of wooden buildings forms a complete small residential area. The centrally located "General's Residence," built in 1936, was once the official residence of Colonel Nakamura, the highest military commander in the Hualien area. Unlike other duplex wooden dormitories, the General's Residence features a standalone design with its own yard and a higher base, indicating a rank superior to the other dormitories. In recent years, through the efforts of the government and local residents, the General's Residence and the surrounding Japanese-style dormitory area have been designated as a county-level historical site. After renovations, it has been opened to the public, with local volunteers providing guided tours to help visitors learn about the historical significance of the General's Residence. In addition to its ancient charm in appearance, the interior decorations of the General's Residence are also quite exquisite, with tatami rooms and corridors filled with Japanese style, and even the cypress cabinets used back in the day have been preserved intact, exuding a fragrant aroma.
