Giant Cauliflower Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Daguaye Columnar Basalt, this majestic basalt rock wall, is formed as magma beneath the seabed rises due to terrain uplift, cools, and contracts, resulting in the fracturing of the rock into hexagonal columns, a phenomenon known as columnar jointing. This site of Daguaye basalt reveals a complete wall of such columnar joints, with its impressive height creating a unique landscape. After heavy rainfall, the depressions in front of the basalt capture rainwater, reflecting the towering rock wall in the water, creating a striking and remarkable scene that often attracts many photographers. It is one of the unique natural landscapes of Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Daguaye Columnar Basalt occurred during the Japanese occupation period when a harbor was constructed at Daguaye Beach to facilitate maritime traffic between Xiyu and Makung. During the excavation of stones and soil at the position of the columnar basalt to fill in the harbor, this ancient geological wonder was unexpectedly unveiled. Since it had been covered under topsoil for many years, the joints remain remarkably intact. [Suggested time to stay] 0.5 hours
