Daguaye Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Puyuma Columnar Basalt at Daguaye is an impressive basalt rock formation. This majestic basalt cliff was formed when magma beneath the sea cooled and contracted due to rising terrain, causing the rock mass to crack into five or six-sided columns, a phenomenon known as columnar jointing. The Daguaye columnar basalt features uniform columnar jointing across the entire cliff face, and its significant height creates a very unique landscape. After heavy rains, the basin in front of the basalt captures rainwater, allowing the towering rock face to reflect in the water, creating a remarkably unique and stunning scene. This often attracts many visitors for photography, making it one of the unique natural landscapes of Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Daguaye columnar basalt occurred during the Japanese colonial period when a decision was made to establish a harbor at the Daguaye coastline to facilitate maritime transportation between Xiyu and Magong. At that time, excavation of soil and stone at the location of the columnar basalt for port construction unexpectedly revealed this ancient formation that had been hidden for thousands of years. Since it had been covered by surface soil for many years, the joints remain well preserved. [Recommended time to stay] 0.5 hours
