Daguaye Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Dahua Leaf Columnar Basalt, a magnificent basalt rock face, was formed due to the cooling and contraction of magma beneath the seabed as tectonic uplift occurred. This led to the fracturing of the rock body into five or six-sided columns, a phenomenon formerly known as columnar jointing. The Dahua Leaf Basalt is notable for its entire mountain face being covered with these columnar joints, and its impressive height creates a very unique landscape. After heavy rains, the concave area in front of the basalt collects rainwater, allowing the towering rock face to be beautifully reflected on the surface, creating a striking and captivating scene that often attracts many visitors for photography. It is one of the unique natural landscapes of Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Dahua Leaf Columnar Basalt occurred during the Japanese colonial period when a pier was constructed by the seaside to facilitate maritime transportation between Xiyu and Magong. During the excavation at the site of the columnar basalt to fill in land for the harbor, this ancient geological feature was unexpectedly revealed. Because it had been covered by soil for many years, the joints have remained remarkably intact. 【Recommended Stay Time】 0.5 hours
