Daguaye Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Columnar Basalt at Daguaye is a magnificent basalt cliff formed by the cooling and contraction of magma that rose from beneath the sea floor, resulting in the formation of five- and six-sided columns known as columnar jointing. This large area of columnar basalt features these jointing formations throughout the entire mountainside and stands at a significant height, creating a very unique landscape. After heavy rainfall, the depression in front of the basalt collects rainwater, reflecting the towering rock face on the water's surface, creating a stunning and remarkable scene that often attracts many visitors for photography. It is one of the unique natural attractions in Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Daguaye Columnar Basalt occurred during the Japanese colonial period when a wharf was built at Daguaye Beach to facilitate maritime transport between Xiyu and Magong. During the construction, stones were excavated at the location of the columnar basalt to fill in and create the harbor, inadvertently revealing these columns that had been hidden for thousands of years beneath the soil. Due to being covered for many years, the jointing has remained quite intact. 【Suggested visit duration】 0.5 hours
