Daguaye Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Daguaye Columnar Basalt is a magnificent basalt rock wall formed by the cooling and contraction of magma beneath the sea floor due to uplifted terrain, resulting in the fracturing of the rock into five- and six-sided columns, known as columnar joints. This section of Daguaye Basalt is characterized by its entire cliff face being composed of these columnar joints and its significant height, creating a very unique landscape. After heavy rains, the depression in front of the basalt captures rainwater, perfectly reflecting the towering rock wall on its surface, forming a striking and extraordinary scene that frequently attracts many visitors who come to take photos. It is one of the special natural landscapes of Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Daguaye Columnar Basalt occurred during the Japanese colonial period when a harbor was planned to facilitate maritime transportation between Xiyu and Magong, leading to the excavation of rocks and soil at the site of the columnar basalt to reclaim land for the harbor, inadvertently revealing this long-hidden geological marvel. Due to being covered by surface soil for many years, the joints have remained remarkably intact. [Recommended stay time] 0.5 hours
