Daguoyeh Columnar Basalt Introduction
The Dajia葉 Columnar Basalt, this magnificent basalt rock wall, was formed due to the upward movement of magma beneath the seabed, which cooled and contracted, causing the rock body to fracture into five or six-sided columns, a phenomenon known as columnar jointing. This Dajia葉 columnar basalt features a complete wall of such columnar joints at a significant height, creating a very unique landscape. After heavy rains, the concave area in front of the basalt collects rainwater, reflecting the towering rock wall on the water's surface, resulting in a stunning and unique sight that often attracts many visitors for photography, making it one of the special natural attractions of Xiyu Township. The discovery of the Dajia葉 columnar basalt occurred during the Japanese colonial period when a landing dock was established on the Dajia葉 shore to facilitate marine transportation between Xiyu and Magong. At that time, stones and soil were excavated from the location of the columnar basalt to fill in the harbor, unintentionally revealing this dormant columnar basalt that had been covered for thousands of years. Due to being long concealed beneath the surface soil, the joints remain remarkably intact. [Recommended Stay Time] 0.5 hours.
