Fisherman Island Visitor Center Introduction
Xiyu Island is named for its location on the western side of Penghu Island and is also known as "Fisherman Island." This nickname comes from the rich marine resources of the Taiwan Strait, where many fishing boats operate in the waters west of Xiyu. As a result, "Fisherman Island" was once used by Europeans to refer to the entire Penghu Archipelago. The Fisherman Island Visitor Center is located on the Xiyu side of the Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge. Inside the center, there are rich exhibitions and professional guides to explain the cultural features of Xiyu. Visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the bridge from the observation deck on the upper floor! Opposite the visitor center stands the Old Fisherman statue, a monument symbolizing the prosperity of fishing on Xiyu for over 30 years. However, years of exposure to the sun and sea winds have caused the statue to become rusty and worn. After polishing and refurbishing in 2021, it has returned to its former glory. Additionally, in front of the visitor center, there is a sculpture titled "Fish Leap Abundance" created by artist Hong Yi, inspired by the county fish of Penghu, the camouflage grouper, incorporating elements of Penghu's culture, nature, and ecology. This colorful and eye-catching piece aims to raise awareness about the marine ecosystem of Penghu through imaginative sculpture.
