Fisherman Island Visitor Center Introduction
Xiyu, named for its location on the western side of Penghu Island, is also known as "Yuwong Island." This name originates from the rich fishing resources found in the Taiwan Strait since ancient times, where many fishing boats operate in the waters to the west of Xiyu. Consequently, Yuwong Island was also used by Europeans as a general term for the Penghu Islands. The Yuwong Island Visitor Center is located on the Xiyu side of the Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge, featuring various exhibitions and professional guides who explain the cultural aspects of Xiyu. Visitors can also enjoy a full side view of the Cross-Sea Bridge from the observation deck on the upper floor! Opposite the visitor center stands the Old Fisherman Statue, which has been a symbol of the prosperous fishing industry in Xiyu for over 30 years. However, exposure to sunlight and seawater over the years caused the originally bright statue to become rusted and mottled. After being polished and refurbished in 2021, the statue has returned to its former glory. Additionally, in front of the visitor center, there is a colorful sculpture titled "Surplus of Fish," created by artist Hong Yi, featuring the county fish of Penghu, the hawkfish, and reflecting the culture, nature, and ecology of Penghu. This imaginative sculpture aims to help more people recognize the marine ecological environment of Penghu.
