Erkan Grassland Introduction
Erkan Grassland, with its intense sunlight and low rainfall, is not conducive to the growth of shrubs. Instead, low, wind-resistant plants flourish on the plateau surrounding the Erkan settlement, creating a flat, verdant area commonly known as Erkan Grassland. The visual effect of the grassland resembles a soft green carpet, clean and spacious during summer. In 2002, a McDonald's advertisement chose to market the desolate "dancing dry grass" of Erkan Grassland under the winter monsoon to the world. The view from Erkan Grassland feels distant yet not exhausting. It has a European-like charm, with agaves and cosmos flowers punctuating the skyline. In summer, visitors occasionally fly kites at dusk, creating a leisurely atmosphere. During the Japanese colonial period, there were 20 yellow cattle raised here. With the out-migration of the population and the fallow of farmland, only a few forgotten old cows remain on the grassland. Occasionally, residents from neighboring villages bring their cattle, bringing life back to the grassland with the sounds of mooing. Currently, there are also flocks of sheep, adding more vitality. The term “Gangkeng Grassland” generally refers to the area between the top of the Dakeng Creek and the columnar basalt at Lipzaizai, which has never been the core of Erkan's industrial activities but is an essential element in the depiction of Erkan's beautiful scenery.
