Erkan Village Preservation Area Introduction
Erkan Community features traditional houses built with stone bricks and red tiles at every turn, with paths made not of asphalt but of traditional stone bricks. In 1989, Erkan Village was designated as a traditional settlement preservation area, becoming Taiwan's first traditional settlement preservation zone. Founded during the Qing Dynasty's Xianfeng and Tongzhi period, the most famous site in Erkan Village is the Chen Family Mansion, which is listed as a third-level historic site. It boasts the largest scale in the county, with remarkable stone carvings, wood carvings, and calligraphy within the residence, making it a standout among private homes. Currently, it is the only paid mansion for visits in Erkan. Erkan is one of the few preserved traditional settlements in Taiwan, and now includes facilities such as a children's play museum, a traditional museum, and an intertidal zone museum. Visitors can relive the sweetness of childhood by purchasing snacks at the local stores, as well as local "mosquito repellent" made from tianrenju (jewel flower), mugwort, and hibiscus. Erkan not only represents historical architecture in Penghu but is also one of Taiwan's historical architectural gems. Walking through the Erkan settlement, visitors can see picturesque rural scenes, and being in Erkan feels like stepping back in time to revisit the hometown of one's childhood. Untouched by urbanization and technology, it adheres to maintaining its original appearance and holds significant historical and cultural value, making it a must-visit location in Penghu. In 2001, Erkan Village was designated by the Ministry of the Interior as the country's first traditional settlement preservation area. In recent years, the restoration of the ancient houses has been fully utilized by the Erkan Village Settlement Association, developing into various small exhibition halls with local cultural characteristics, including a common people's life museum, an intertidal zone museum, a community museum, a traditional Chinese medicine museum, a children's play museum, and a bao song museum.
