Erkan Settlement Conservation Area Introduction
The Erkan Historic Village Community features traditional houses built with stone bricks and red tiles, with the roads not paved in asphalt but rather with traditional stone bricks. In 1989, Erkan Village was designated as a traditional settlement protection area, making it Taiwan's first such area. The preservation area of Erkan Village dates back to the Qing Dynasty during the Xianfeng and Tongzhi periods and is most famous for the Chen Family Ancestral Hall, which is classified as a Level 3 historic site. This large residence is not only the largest in the county but also renowned for its stone carvings, wood carvings, and paintings among residential buildings. Currently, it is the only house in Erkan that charges admission for visits. Erkan is one of the few traditional settlement preservation areas in the country and now features a Children's Amusement Hall, a Traditional Museum, and an Intertidal Zone Museum, allowing visitors to relive the sweetness of childhood by buying snacks at local shops and to purchase locally made "mosquito repellent" products made from Tainin chrysanthemum, mugwort, and mountain hibiscus. Besides being a significant historical building in Penghu, Erkan is also one of the hundred historical buildings in Taiwan. Walking through the Erkan settlement, one can witness pastoral scenery and rural landscapes, making it feel as if one has traveled back in time to their childhood hometown. This area remains untouched by urbanization and technology, preserving its original appearance and holding significant historical and cultural value, making it a must-visit location in Penghu. In 2001, Erkan Village was designated by the Ministry of the Interior as the first traditional settlement preservation area in the country. In recent years, the restoration of the historic houses has been fully utilized by the Erkan Village Community Association, which has developed the site into various small exhibition halls showcasing local cultural characteristics, including a Common Life Hall, Intertidal Zone Museum, Community Museum, Chinese Medicine Hall, Children's Amusement Hall, and Praise Hall.
