Shan Wan Ran Hakka Puppet Troupe Introduction
Shan Wanran Troupe was established in 2002 by Huang Wushan. He learned traditional puppet theater skills from the sons of the national treasure puppet master Li Tianlu, Chen Xihuang and Li Chuancan. In 2003, he graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts with a focus on theater arts, gaining an understanding of the dedication of his mentors. He also learned Hakka mountain songs from the Hakka Song Queen Lai Bixia, infusing Hakka culture into traditional puppet shows. This has made him one of the few young professionals in Taiwan capable of performing traditional puppet theater and possessing a foundation in theatrical academic theory, thereby keeping the flame of traditional puppet theater alive. The Shan Wanran Troupe fully understands the importance of Hakka cultural transmission. Currently, it focuses on production and performance while actively participating in various arts festival activities. It has also begun planning courses that combine Hakka theater, Hakka puppet theater, and Hakka music. By utilizing the vibrant and lively performance style of puppet puppets, the troupe aims to attract the younger generation of Hakka people to pay attention to Hakka cultural arts, rekindle the Hakka spirit, and help non-Hakka communities understand the diversity and inclusiveness of Hakka culture.
