Second Market, Taichung City Introduction
The Second Market (officially Taichung City Public Second Retail Market) is located at the intersection of Sanmin Road and Section 1 of Taiwan Boulevard in the Central District of Taichung City. It covers an area of 2,388 ping and has a three-wing radial architectural design, with a hexagonal main building at its center. The market contains 54 shops and approximately 300 stalls selling a variety of goods. Originally known as the New Wealth Town Market during the Japanese colonial period, it was primarily known for selling exquisite and expensive products, earning the nickname "the market of the Japanese." After comprehensive renovations by the Taichung City Government, it has taken on its current appearance, boasting a history of over a century. The Second Market was an essential marketplace for everyday goods in early Taichung, offering a diverse range of products that necessitated the categorization of vendor locations, resulting in the hexagon-shaped radial passageways, hence also known as "Hexagon Street." The market gathers many renowned delicious snacks, including Shanhe Braised Pork Rice, Old Lai Milk Tea, Old Wang Radish Cake, Zou Ji Scallion Pancakes, Li Hai Lu Rou Fan, Mao Chuan Meatballs, Yan Ji Pork Buns, and Fuzhou Egg Noodles, which are unforgettable tastes for locals and popular attractions for visitors.
