Taichung Second Market Introduction
The Second Market (officially Taichung City Public Second Retail Market) is located at the intersection of Sanmin Road and Section 1 of Taiwan Boulevard in the Central District of Taichung City. Covering an area of 2,388 ping, it features a three-wing radial architectural style, with a hexagonal main building at its center. The market houses 54 shops and approximately 300 stalls selling a variety of goods. Originally established as the Shinfuchō Market during the Japanese colonial period, it was known for selling exquisite and high-priced products, earning the nickname "Japanese Market." It has since been completely renovated by the Taichung City Government, showcasing its current appearance and boasts a history of over a century. The Second Market was an important distribution hub for daily necessities in early Taichung, leading to a diverse range of products that required categorization of vendors, resulting in the market's hexagonal radial layout, also known as "Liutiao Tong." The market gathers numerous famous local snacks, such as Shanhe Braised Pork Rice, Old Lai Milk Tea, Old Wang Radish Cake, Zou Ji Scallion Pancake, Li Hai Lu Rou Fan, Mao Chuan Meatballs, Yan Ji Meat Buns, and Fuzhou Delicious Noodles, all of which are unforgettable flavors for locals and popular delicacies for visitors.
