Taichung Second Market Introduction
The Second Market (officially Taichung City Public Second Retail Market) is located at the intersection of Sanmin Road and Section 1, Taiwan Boulevard in Central Taichung. It occupies an area of 2,388 ping and features a three-wing radial architectural style, with a hexagonal main building at its center. The market contains 54 shops and approximately 300 stalls selling various goods. Originally known as the Shinfuchō Market during the Japanese colonial period, it primarily sold exquisite and high-priced goods and was also referred to as "the market for the Japanese." After a complete renovation by the Taichung City Government, it has taken on its current appearance and has a history of over a century. The Second Market was an important marketplace for daily necessities in early Taichung, offering a diverse range of products, which required categorizing vendor locations. This design gives the market's passageways a hexagonal radial shape, thus earning it the nickname "Hexagonal Street." The market is home to many well-known delicious snacks, including Shanhe Braised Pork Rice, Old Lai Red Tea, Old Wang Radish Cake, Tsou's Scallion Pancakes, Li Hai Lu Rou Fan, Mao Chuan Meatballs, Yan's Pork Buns, and Fuzhou Yi Mian, all of which are unforgettable flavors cherished by locals and famous culinary delights that attract visitors from afar.
