Taichung Second Market Introduction
The Second Market (officially known as Taichung City Public Second Retail Market) is located at the intersection of Sanmin Road and Section 1 of Taiwan Boulevard in the Central District of Taichung City. Covering an area of 2,388 ping, it features a three-wing radial architectural design, with a hexagonal main building at its core. The market houses 54 shops and approximately 300 stalls selling a variety of goods. Originally known as the Newrich Town Market during the Japanese colonial period, it specialized in selling exquisite and high-priced products, earning the nickname "Market of the Japanese." After comprehensive renovations by the Taichung City Government, it has taken on its current appearance and has a history of nearly eighty years. The Second Market was once a crucial marketplace for daily necessities in early Taichung, leading to a diverse range of products that required classification to designate vendor locations, resulting in the market's corridor taking on a hexagonal radial shape, hence the name "Liutiao Street." The market gathers many famous local delicacies, such as Shanhua Braised Pork Rice, Old Lai Red Tea, Old Wang Radish Cake, Zou Ji Scallion Pancakes, Li Hai Braised Pork Rice, Maocuan Meatballs, Yan Ji Meat Buns, and Fuzhou Noodles, all of which are unforgettable flavors for locals and well-known foods that draw many visitors from afar.
