The Nantian Temple was established in 1952, initially completing the main hall, and the front hall was completed in 1953. It is primarily dedicated to Guan Yu, also known as the Saint of War, and at that time, it was the largest Guan Yu temple in Taichung City. In 1980, a six-story pedestal was erected, reaching a height of 146 meters for the statue of the Holy Emperor. After its completion in 1984, this towering statue became a landmark of Nantian Temple, visible from afar.

Nantian Temple currently stands six stories tall, with each level dedicated to different deities: Confucius, the Loyal and Righteous Duke Yue Fei, the God of Wealth, the Earth God, the Old Man Under the Moon, the God of Culture (Wenchang Dijun), the Holy Mother, the Goddess of Birth (Zhu Sheng Niang Niang), Guanyin Bodhisattva, Emperor Baosheng, the Jade Emperor, the Southern Dipper Star Lord, the Northern Dipper Star Lord, Emperor Fuyou, the Xuantian Emperor, and the Heavenly Official. Upon reaching the sixth floor, one can look down and take in the entire view of the streets of Taichung's East District, bringing a sense of peace and tranquility.
