Taichung City God Temple Introduction
The City God is the spiritual center for the public. The City God worships the City God deity, Guan Yu, Zhinü (Goddess of Birth), the City God’s wife, Ma Zu (Goddess of Heaven), the Earth God, Wenchang Dijun, Wen and Wu Judges, General Xie, General Fan, and the Bull and Horse elders, as well as the Yin and Yang officials. The City God was originally built in the tenth year of Guangxu (1884) by Huang Chengyi, the magistrate of Taichung during the Qing Dynasty, in Le Ye Li of the eastern district of Taichung City, which is now the site of the Taichung Sugar Factory. After the First Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan fell into disarray, and the original temple site was transformed into a sugar factory by the Japanese, causing the deity's status to be relocated multiple times. In the tenth year of the Republic of China, prominent figures such as Lin Zijing, Wu Ziyu, Lin Yandun, Lin Zufen, Lai Qingyan, and Lin Chengpo initiated the reconstruction of the new temple at 50, Lane 94, Cooperation Street, South District, Taichung City, which continues to this day. The City God enshrined in the Taichung City City God Temple manages the local officials of Taichung City under the jurisdiction of the former province. Due to the strong and devout belief in the local community, the City God Temple is still thriving, and every year on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month, it celebrates the City God’s festival, which is a significant religious event in the area. A grand birthday celebration is held, and from the beginning of the sixth lunar month, a large number of worshippers from various places flock to the temple. In addition to the festival, there are parades, performances, and other folk activities, making the temple's front stage come alive with drums and cheers as plays are performed in honor of the deity, presenting a lively scene.
