Dakeng Scenic Area Introduction
After the 921 earthquake, the Chelungpu Fault traversed Dakeng, leading to significant ground changes. Many experts discovered the hot spring resources here, giving rise to a new form of tourism. The Dakeng Scenic Area features natural ecology, hot spring bathing, and convenient transportation, and was once selected as one of the top ten popular tourist spots in Taichung. Visitors should not miss it! Currently, the Dakeng Scenic Area has 14 hiking trails, with a total length of approximately 17.7 kilometers, varying in difficulty levels. Nearby, there are hot springs formed as a result of the 921 earthquake, as well as the original military-excellence elementary school and Dongshan Junior High School, which were rebuilt into the Dakeng Earthquake Memorial Park, preserving remnants of the Chelungpu Fault Zone and leaning school buildings for educational use. The park connects to Trail 9, which is convenient for parking and has a moderate difficulty level, making it a popular spot for weekend relaxation. Trails 1 to 8 were established in the early 1980s, constructed according to the natural terrain formed by the interweaving of Dakeng Mountain and streams, with the highest elevation at 859 meters, which is Taichung's highest point: Toukanshan. Trail 9 was developed in December 2005, Trail 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail 9-1 was finished in November 2013. Each of these 14 hiking trails varies in difficulty and serves as a recreational spot for citizens to exercise and enjoy the outdoors on weekends. Pavilions are built between the trails for relaxation and scenic views. Culturally, Dakeng was once a significant tobacco production base in Taiwan, and to this day, one or two historical tobacco barns remain in the area, witnessing the past prosperity and development, allowing people to reminisce about this history.
