The Dakeng Scenic Area is located in the Beitun District of Taichung City. Established by the Taichung City Government in 1976, it ranges in elevation from 112 meters to 859 meters. The name "Dakeng" originates from the early residents who mainly gathered in a broad valley, hence the name. The initial inhabitants were primarily Hakka people, and even earlier, it was an area inhabited by the Pingpu indigenous people. The area is home to over 30 species of deciduous trees, and during the transition between the dry and wet seasons, it often creates stunning scenes with golden leaves covering the ground, comparable to the autumn foliage of Aowanda. It possesses the highest degree of natural beauty in Taichung City, making it an ideal destination for public leisure, recreation, and forest bathing on weekends.

Dakeng Scenic Area Introduction

The Dakeng Scenic Area is located in the Beitun District of Taichung City. Developed by the Taichung City Government in the 65th year of the Republic of China, it stands at an elevation of 112 to 860 meters, serving as Taichung's backyard. After the 921 earthquake, the Chelungpu Fault traversed Dakeng, leading to significant geological changes. Many experts discovered the hot spring resources here, thus introducing a new form of tourism. The Dakeng Scenic Area offers natural ecology, hot spring bathing, and convenient transportation, and has been selected as one of Taichung's top ten popular tourist attractions. Visitors should not miss it! Currently, there are 14 hiking trails in the Dakeng Scenic Area, totaling approximately 17.7 kilometers, with varying difficulties. Nearby, there are hot springs formed by the 921 earthquake, along with the former military school, Jun Gong Elementary School, and Dongshan Junior High School, which were rebuilt into the Dakeng Earthquake Memorial Park, preserving remnants of the Chelungpu Fault and some dilapidated school buildings for educational purposes. The park connects to the No. 9 trail, which offers convenient parking and moderate difficulty, making it a popular weekend relaxation spot. Trails No. 1 to 8 were opened in the early 70s of the Republic of China, constructed based on the natural terrain where Dakeng Mountain intersects with streams, with the highest point at 859 meters, which is the highest point in Taichung City: Toujian Mountain. Trail No. 9 was opened in December 2005, Trail No. 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail No. 9-1 was constructed in November 2013. Each of these 14 hiking trails varies in difficulty and serves as a place for citizens to exercise and enjoy nature on weekends. Pavilions are set up between the trails for mountain climbing and enjoying the scenery, providing a refreshing experience. Culturally, Dakeng was also one of the earliest tobacco production areas in Taiwan. Although tobacco farming has declined, one or two tobacco buildings still remain in the area for people to reminisce.
