Dakeng Scenic Area is located in Beitun District, Taichung City. Established by the Taichung City Government in 1976, it has an elevation ranging from 112 meters to 859 meters. The name "Dakeng" comes from the fact that the early residents lived primarily in a wide valley, which led to its name. The first settlers here were mostly Hakka people, and even earlier, it was an area inhabited by the Plains Indigenous Peoples. The area is home to over 30 species of deciduous trees, creating breathtaking scenes of golden fallen leaves during the transition between dry and wet seasons, comparable to the autumn foliage of Aowanda. It features the highest degree of naturalness in Taichung City, making it a great spot for weekend leisure, recreation, and forest bathing.

Dakeng Scenic Area Introduction

After the 921 earthquake, the Chelungpu Fault crossed Dakeng, and following significant geological changes, many experts discovered the hot spring resources here, leading to the development of a new type of tourism. The Dakeng Scenic Area features natural ecology, hot springs, and convenient transportation, and has been selected as one of the top ten tourist attractions in Taichung. Tourists should definitely not miss it! Currently, there are 14 hiking trails in the Dakeng Scenic Area, with a total length of approximately 17.7 kilometers, varying in difficulty levels. Nearby hot springs were formed due to the 921 earthquake, and the former military Gonggong Elementary School and Dongshan Junior High School have been transformed into the Dakeng Earthquake Memorial Park, which preserves the remnants of the Chelungpu Fault and dilapidated school buildings for educational use. The park connects to Trail No. 9, which is convenient for parking and is of moderate difficulty, making it a popular place for weekend relaxation. Trails No. 1 to No. 8 were opened in the early 1980s, constructed based on the natural landscape of Dakeng Mountain and streams, with the highest elevation being 859 meters, which is the highest point in Taichung City: Touko Mountain. Trail No. 9 was opened in December 2005, Trail No. 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail No. 9-1 was completed in November 2013. Each of these 14 hiking trails varies in difficulty, serving as a place for citizens to exercise and enjoy leisure outings on weekends. Pavilions are set up between the trails, allowing visitors to rest and enjoy the scenic views. Culturally, Dakeng was once an important base for tobacco production in Taiwan, and to this day, several historical tobacco curing barns remain in the area, witnessing the past prosperity and development, evoking memories of this history.
