The Dakeng Scenic Area is located in the North District of Taichung City. It was developed and established by the Taichung City Government in 1976, with an elevation ranging from 112 meters to 859 meters. The name "Dakeng" comes from the fact that early residents lived mainly in a broad valley, which led to its naming. The majority of the initial inhabitants here were Hakka people, while it was previously a territory inhabited by the Pingpu people. There are over 30 species of deciduous trees here, and during the transition between dry and wet seasons, the ground often becomes covered with beautiful golden leaves, rivaling the autumn foliage of Aowanda. It possesses the highest level of natural features in Taichung City, making it a great place for the public to relax, recreate, and enjoy forest bathing on holidays.

Dakeng Scenic Area Introduction

After the 921 earthquake, the Chelungpu Fault cut through the Dakeng area, leading to significant geological changes. Many experts discovered hot spring resources here, resulting in a new form of tourism. The Dakeng Scenic Area features natural ecology, hot springs, and convenient transportation, and it was once selected as one of the top ten popular tourist attractions in Taichung, which visitors should not miss! Currently, the Dakeng Scenic Area has 14 hiking trails, totaling about 17.7 kilometers, with varying levels of difficulty. Nearby, there are hot springs formed due to the 921 earthquake, and the former military school, Gungong Elementary School, and Dongshan Junior High School have been transformed into the Dakeng Earthquake Memorial Park, preserving the remnants of the Chelungpu Fault and the dilapidated school buildings for educational purposes. The park connects with Trail No. 9, which is convenient for parking and moderately challenging, making it a popular spot for visitors during weekends. Trails No. 1 to 8 were opened in the early 1980s and were constructed according to the natural topography of the Dakeng Mountain and streams, with the highest elevation reaching 859 meters, the highest point in Taichung City: Toukeshan. Trail No. 9 was opened in December 2005, Trail No. 10 was completed in March 2008, and Trail No. 9-1 was completed in November 2013. These 14 hiking trails vary in difficulty, providing excellent opportunities for citizens to exercise and enjoy nature on weekends. Pavilions are set up between the trails, allowing hikers to take in the views and relax. Culturally, Dakeng was once an important base for tobacco production in Taiwan, and the area still retains one or two historic tobacco buildings that bear witness to its past prosperity and development, evoking nostalgia for this history.
