The sandy area at the estuary of the western coast of Taiwan is home to many mangroves, which play essential roles in regulating salinity, flood prevention, and maintaining ecological diversity. The mangrove forest at the estuary of the Wenliao River in the Daan District of Taichung is a particularly important area. Here, the only mangrove plant is the Avicennia marina, which is artificially planted and covers an area of approximately 2 hectares. The surrounding area features reed wetlands, while the northern beach has artificial windbreak forests of Casuarina equisetifolia and Hibiscus tiliaceus, along with accompanying plants such as Mikania micrantha, Imperata cylindrica, and Miscanthus sinensis.

Mangrove Ecosystem Area Introduction

At the Daan Mangrove Area, there is the Daan Ecological Education Park, located at a pond on the southern bank of the Wenliao River. The Daan Water Mimosa, a rare and precious plant species endemic to Taiwan, is found in this area and is quite scarce, making it worthy of protection and restoration. In the Wenliao Mangrove, visitors can observe mangrove plants, white-fingered mud crabs, curved-clawed mud crabs, mudskippers, little egrets, yellow-headed egrets, and more. Thus, here, one can enjoy activities such as tree watching, bird watching, and crab observation, closely connecting with nature. Additionally, about 600 meters to the north of the mangrove ecological area is the famous seaside resort, "Daan Coastal Park."
