Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center Introduction
The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center, located in the Dashu District of Kaohsiung City, is an important landmark that integrates Buddhist culture, historical heritage, and modern architectural art. Since its completion in 2011, it has become a significant pilgrimage site for global Buddhist believers and cultural enthusiasts. It is an official member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and has won awards from TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website, for six consecutive years starting in 2014, achieving the honor of entering the "Hall of Fame." The construction of the Buddha Memorial Center was inspired by Master Hsing Yun's vow to bring the "actual relics of the Buddha" from India to Taiwan, aiming to disseminate the wisdom of Buddhism through this solemn religious hall. This site is not only a spiritual sanctuary but also a diverse space for promoting Buddhist culture, art, and education, allowing everyone to experience tranquility and inspiration. Upon entering the memorial center via the Avenue of Enlightenment and the Fo Guang Buddha, visitors are greeted by a 240-meter-long Avenue of Enlightenment, flanked by eight pagodas that symbolize the "Noble Eightfold Path," guiding travelers on their journey of practice, calming their minds, and experiencing the wisdom and compassion of Buddhism. Standing behind the memorial hall, the bronze Buddha, measuring 50 meters tall and extending to 108 meters including the base, is the largest seated Buddha statue in Asia. The Buddha’s compassionate gaze symbolizes the boundless love of the dharma, protecting the world and inspiring good thoughts and wisdom. The centerpiece of the center is the actual relic of the Buddha, one of only three remaining in the world, making it extremely precious. This relic was welcomed back to Taiwan by Master Hsing Yun in 1998 and enshrined in the memorial hall in 2011 for the faithful to pay their respects. The relic housed at Fo Guang Shan is not only a treasure of the Buddhist community but also an invaluable cultural heritage. The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center is dedicated not only to promoting the dharma but also hopes to allow the public to find inner peace and wisdom within its solemn and tranquil surroundings. Master Hsing Yun advocates the concept of Humanistic Buddhism and promotes the "Three Good Deeds Movement"—doing good deeds, speaking good words, and maintaining a good mind—encouraging people to implement the spirit of Buddhism in their daily lives to create a more harmonious and beautiful world through good intentions. Whether seeking spiritual calmness or exploring the profound depth of Buddhist culture, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center is a treasured site that is worth visiting in person. ▶ Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center Transportation Information
