Fu Hsing Factory 1962 Introduction

Located in the old city area of Taichung, "Fuhsing Factory 1962" was originally Taiwan's first registered cosmetics manufacturing factory, "Sheng Hsiang Tang." This over sixty-year-old factory has experienced urban changes and has now been revitalized into a new hub of cultural creativity and aesthetic living. **[History of Sheng Hsiang Tang]** The story of Sheng Hsiang Tang began in 1931 when Taichung citizen Hsu Chien founded "Sheng Hsiang Chai," specializing in "Lin Sen" hair cream and face cream. After the war, Sheng Hsiang Chai was officially renamed "Sheng Hsiang Tang" with approval from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, becoming Taiwan's first registered cosmetics manufacturing factory; it obtained Taiwan's first trademark registration certificate in 1951, making it a pioneer of the cosmetics industry in Taiwan. In 1953, the factory moved to Fuxing Road and continued to expand its product lines, covering hair creams, perfumes, soaps, and more. Sheng Hsiang Tang partnered with the Osaka branch of Tokyo, Japan in the 1960s to launch the "Naying Oil-based Face Cream" and held beauty demonstrations, injecting international elements into the brand. The "Cherry Black Sugar Soap" developed in 1962 became popular across Taiwan, and the subsequent "Xue Fu Lan" skincare series remains a well-known product to this day. In the 1970s, with business expansion, Sheng Hsiang Tang moved to a new site at Daqing Factory on Jianguo South Road and continued to develop its brand market. **[Old Building Restoration and Cultural Regeneration]** As the old city area of Taichung transformed and declined, the early production factory of Sheng Hsiang Tang gradually faded from public sight. However, as a symbol of Taiwan's cosmetics industry, its cultural value cannot be overlooked. In 2021, through the restoration by the "Ching-Chu Design" team, this historical building was reborn under the name "Fuhsing Factory 1962" and established "Fuhsing Factory Cultural Co., Ltd." to continue operations. The renovation process focused on preserving the historical appearance, transforming the factory into a cultural exhibition space while providing a platform for creative design and aesthetic living brands. The internal planning of Fuhsing Factory combines cultural creation, design, and educational functions, allowing visitors to experience the changes of the factory and the city through exhibitions of Sheng Hsiang Tang's historical artifacts and stories, appreciating the cultural value of old buildings. **[The Era Value of Fuhsing Factory]** After its remarkable transformation, Fuhsing Factory won the "Red Dot Design Award" and the "GOOD DESIGN AWARD" in Japan in 2023, and in 2024, it received the "iF Design Award" in Germany, encompassing the world's three major design awards, becoming a successful example of old building revitalization in Taichung that attracts numerous cultural and creative brands. This place not only preserves Taiwan's industrial and cultural memories but also serves as a stage for the fusion of creativity, design, and aesthetic industries. Regular exhibitions and events attract participants of various ages, injecting new vitality into the old city area. **[Future Development and Aspirations]** The rebirth of Fuhsing Factory not only evokes resonance with history but also brings positive impacts to cultural regeneration and economic development in Taichung. Balancing preservation and innovation, Fuhsing Factory achieves a connection between the past and the future, becoming a new landmark of aesthetic living and cultural creativity in Taichung. Through the restoration and revitalization of this historical building, we can not only witness a segment of historical memory but also feel the sustainable power of culture. Fuhsing Factory tells a touching story about inheritance, innovation, and regeneration through its own narrative.
