Jinhu Wanshan Ye Temple Introduction
The Fishing Port Festival honors ancestors and seeks peace. The Jinhu Wanshan Temple was established in 1957, with its incense originating from the Wanshan Shrine in Huanzi Village, Hanziliao. This festival is held to commemorate maritime disasters during the Daoguang period, with residents from Jinhu and Hanziliao conducting water-drawing rituals on the 7th and 8th days of the sixth lunar month to pray for local peace. Located in Gangdong Village, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County, near Jinhu, the Jinhu Wanshan Temple was built during the Qing Xianfeng period to mourn the four thousand souls lost in a tsunami in Jinhu District in 1845. The local residents specially enclosed a stone pond for Wanshan worship and built a shrine for future generations to pay tribute. With over 150 years of history, the temple has been relocated to a higher area due to flooding during heavy rains and the widening of the Western Coastal Highway. Currently, the water-drawing ritual is held on the 8th day of the sixth lunar month, creating a sensation throughout the province, and it is the most significant folk event in the coastal area of Kouhu Township.
