Jinhu Wanshan Temple Introduction

The Fisherman's Port Festival honors ancestors and seeks peace. The Jinhu Wanshan Temple was established in 1957 and is a branch of the Wanshan Temple from the Hanguantou Village. It commemorates a maritime disaster during the Daoguang Era. Residents from Jinhu and Hanguantou gather on the 7th and 8th days of the sixth lunar month to perform water-drawing rituals to lift the souls of the deceased and pray for local safety. The Jinhu Wanshan Temple is located near Jinhu Xiaow, Gangdong Village, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County. It was built during the Qing Dynasty's Xianfeng period in memory of the 1845 tsunami victims in the Jinhu area. The residents have specifically set aside a piece of stone pond for the spirits and built a hall for descendants to worship. It has a history of over 150 years, but due to heavy rain and seawater backflow, the temple was relocated and elevated towards the east when the Western Coastal Highway was widened, resulting in its current appearance. Every year on the 8th day of the sixth lunar month, a water-drawing ritual is held, making it the most significant folk activity in the coastal area of Kouhu Township.
