Fengshi Tower, Suo Gang Township Introduction
Penghu is characterized by strong winds and harsh weather conditions, which pose significant threats to daily life. To withstand this challenging environment, many protective structures known as stone pagodas have been erected to ward off wind and evil spirits. The Lock Harbor Stone Pagoda consists of two parts: the South Pagoda (Wu Pagoda) and the North Pagoda (Zi Pagoda). It is located north of the old settlement and stands nearly three stories high. Originally, there was a small hill at the site of the stone pagoda, which served as a natural barrier. However, due to the powerful northeast monsoon, this hill gradually disappeared. As a result, a local proverb emerged: "Lock Harbor lost a mountain, Zhu Mu Shui lost a bay," indicating that the sand dunes of the area were blown away to the bay of Zhu Mu Shui. To compensate for the loss of the natural barrier, two large stone pagodas were built on the original site to mitigate the damage caused by the impermanence of the landscape. Originally constructed from black stones, they were rebuilt in 1962 using black stone cement materials (made of basalt and cement). The base area measures approximately 66 square meters. Initially designed as a seven-tiered stone barrier, it was reconstructed in 1962 to become nine tiers, making it the tallest stone pagoda in all of Penghu, standing about 14 meters high.
