Suogang Township Wind Stone Tower Introduction
Penghu is often affected by strong winds and harsh weather, posing significant threats to life. To resist these adverse conditions, many talismans—such as stone pagodas—have been erected for wind protection and to ward off evil. The Lock Port Stone Pagoda consists of the South Tower (Wutou) and the North Tower (Zit), located to the north of the old settlement and standing nearly three stories high. The site where the stone pagodas are located was originally a small hill that served as a supportive backdrop for the community. However, due to the strong northeast monsoon winds, this hill gradually disappeared, leading to the local saying: "Locking the port took a mountain, while the pig mother's water took a bay," which illustrates how the sand dunes of the community were blown to the Pig Mother Water (Shanshui) harbor. Therefore, two large stone pagodas were built on the original site to compensate for the loss of the mountain and to remedy the damage caused by the wind and water. Initially built from black stones, it was rebuilt in the 51st year of the Republic of China using black stone and cement materials (made of basalt and cement). Its footprint is approximately sixty-six square meters on the first level. Originally a seven-tier stacked stone guard tower, it was rebuilt into a nine-tier structure in the 51st year of the Republic of China, making it the tallest stone pagoda in all of Penghu, standing about fourteen meters high. 【Recommended stay time】 1 hour
