Suogang Township Wind Stone Tower Introduction
Penghu is known for its strong winds and harsh climate, which pose a significant threat to life. To combat the severe environment, many protective objects, such as stone towers, have been established for wind protection and to ward off evil spirits. The Lockport Stone Tower is composed of two towers: the South Tower (Wutai) and the North Tower (Zitai), located to the north of the old settlement. It stands nearly three stories high. Originally, there was a small hill where the stone tower is located, which served as a support for the local community, but it gradually disappeared due to the strong northeast monsoon winds. Consequently, a local saying emerged: "Locking the harbor took a mountain, while the pig mother's water took a bay," indicating that the sand dune was blown to the harbor of Pig Mother's Water. To compensate for the loss of the supportive hill, the two large stone towers were built on the original site to rectify the damage to the feng shui. Initially constructed of black stone, it was rebuilt in the 51st year of the Republic of China using black stone and cement materials (made of basalt and cement). The base area of the first tier is approximately sixty-six square meters. Originally a seven-tier stacked stone guardian, it was rebuilt into a nine-tier tower in the 51st year of the Republic of China, making it the tallest stone tower in all of Penghu, standing about fourteen meters high. [Suggested visit duration] 1 hour.
