Suogang Township Wind Stone Tower Introduction
Penghu is characterized by its strong winds and harsh climate, which pose significant threats to life. To combat the adverse environment, many protective objects, such as stone towers, are erected to ward off the wind and evil spirits. The Lock Port Stone Towers consist of two parts: the South Tower (Wu Tower) and the North Tower (Zi Tower). They are located to the north of the old settlement and stand nearly three stories high. The site of the stone towers was originally a small raised hill, serving as a natural barrier for the community; however, it has gradually eroded due to the fierce northeast monsoon. As a result, a local proverb emerged: "Locked the port, lost a mountain; the mother pig's water lost a bay," indicating that the sand dune protecting the community was blown away to the bay of Mother Pig. To compensate for the loss of this natural barrier, two large stone towers were built at the original site to mitigate the damage caused to the feng shui. Originally constructed from black stones, they were reconstructed in the 51st year of the Republic of China using black stone and cement materials (composed of basalt and cement). The area covers approximately 66 square meters on the first level. Initially designed as a seven-tiered stacked stone guardian, it was changed to nine tiers after reconstruction in the 51st year of the Republic of China, making it the tallest stone tower in all of Penghu, standing about 14 meters high.
