Shahai Beach Introduction
To the north of the Matsu settlement lies a small hill resembling the traditional hat worn by ancient officials, known as Shamao Mountain. The Matsu settlement is situated on the crown-shaped protrusion that extends from Shamao, locally referred to as "Sha" in Taiwanese, hence the name "Matsu" or "Matsu Li." To the south of Matsu, there is a white sandy beach made up of coral and shell fragments, facing the ocean. In the past, this area served as a fishing ground where residents caught fish using nets and even developed into the largest seawater bath in the county, with scenery comparable to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. The Matsu Beach stretches over 1 kilometer and features wind-blown sand dunes, a gentle sea, and blue waters, making it the best natural beach for swimming in the Penghu archipelago. Walking on the beach made of coral and shell sands, sunbathing, playing in the water, or camping and barbecuing are all perfect activities for a relaxing getaway. To the west of the beach, there is a steep sand dune known colloquially as "White Horse Slope," which offers a challenge for climbers. Matsu Beach also allows for traditional fishing activities, providing a rich experience of village life! In terms of media, the 2012 television drama "Loves In Penghu" was entirely filmed in Penghu, with the main scenes shot at Matsu Beach. The production retained the fishing boats used during filming, and the picturesque scenery of the sea and sky at Matsu inspired director Liang Xiushen to bring the entire crew to Penghu for the shoot. The drama starred Chen Bozheng, Zhang Qiongzi, Liang Hequn, Bai Xinhui, Zhao Junya, Zhao Shirong, and Shi Yuange, depicting the story of an old captain opposing the gambling industry entering Penghu. Additionally, the beautiful "Canon EOS 650D - Penghu Chapter" advertisement film was also shot at Matsu Beach, so don’t forget to experience it for yourself and take a photo with the fishing boats featured in the drama!
