Yanliao Anti-Japanese Memorial Monument Introduction
The Yanliao Anti-Japanese Memorial is located within Yanliao Coastal Park. After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty and the Empire of Japan signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. The Taiwanese army and civilians organized the Taiwan Republic to resist the Japanese military. On May 29, 1895, Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa led the Imperial Guards Division to land in Aodi, officially starting the Taiwan Uprising. In June, the city of Taipei was surrendered, and Taiwan became a colony of the Empire of Japan, marking the beginning of a 50-year period of Japanese rule. The Japanese military established a landing memorial at Yanliao, and after Taiwan's restoration, the local township office demolished the original monument and rebuilt the Anti-Japanese Memorial to commemorate the heroic spirit of the anti-Japanese martyrs.
