Yanliao Anti-Japanese Memorial Monument Introduction
The Yanliao Anti-Japanese Memorial is located within Yanliao Coastal Park. After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty and the Empire of Japan signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. Taiwanese military and civilians organized the Taiwan Democracy State to resist the Japanese army. On May 29, 1895, Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa, commanding the Guards Division, landed in Aodi, marking the beginning of the First Sino-Japanese War. In June, Taipei surrendered, and Taiwan became a colony of the Japanese Empire, marking the start of a 50-year period of Japanese rule. The Japanese military established a landing memorial at the site of Yanliao's landing. After Taiwan's restoration, the local office abolished the original monument and rebuilt the Anti-Japanese Memorial to commemorate the heroic spirit of the anti-Japanese martyrs.
