Yanliao Anti-Japanese War Memorial Introduction
The Yenliao Anti-Japanese Memorial is located within the Yenliao Coastal Park. After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty and the Empire of Japan signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. The Taiwanese military and civilian organizations formed the Republic of Taiwan to resist the Japanese forces. On May 29, 1895, Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa led the Imperial Guards Division to land at Aodi, marking the official start of the Taiwan Uprising. In June, Taipei surrendered, and Taiwan became a colony of the Japanese Empire, beginning a 50-year period of Japanese rule. A landing memorial was erected by the Japanese army at the site of the Yenliao landing. After the restoration of Taiwan, the local hall abolished the original monument and replaced it with the Anti-Japanese Memorial to commemorate the brave spirits of those who resisted Japanese rule.
