Yanliao Anti-Japanese Memorial碑 Introduction
The Yanshiao Anti-Japanese Memorial is located within Yanshiao Coastal Park. After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty and the Empire of Japan signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. Taiwanese military and civilian groups organized the Taiwan Democratic State to resist the Japanese army. On May 29, 1895, Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa led the Imperial Guards Division and landed at Aodi, marking the beginning of the Taiwan Expedition. In June, Taipei surrendered, and Taiwan became a colony of the Empire of Japan, initiating a 50-year period of Japanese rule. The Japanese army established a landing memorial at Yanshiao. After Taiwan's recovery, the local government removed the original monument and constructed the Anti-Japanese Memorial to commemorate the courageous spirit of the anti-Japanese martyrs.
