Houtong Visitor Center Introduction
The Hohung Visitor Center is located near the North Road of the Dalan Ancient Trail and the Jinzibei Ancient Trail. Completed in June 2022, its design emphasizes sustainability and integration with the surrounding environment. The semi-enclosed roof and open corridor allow natural light and breezes to flow through the courtyard. The roof is covered with a red film system that matches the red bricks of the old houses in the surrounding settlement and the green natural environment. The low-hanging roof serves as a boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces and directs rainwater to a rain garden, echoing the local natural environment and emphasizing ecological cycles. This creates a landmark effect of a splash of red amidst the lush greenery of the mountainous jungle. In addition to continuing the functions of a rest stop for visitors, the new design provides more resting and shaded areas for hikers and cyclists to take breaks and recharge after environmental improvements. The exhibition area on the right side of the building promotes the century-old Dalan Ancient Trail and the intersection of human history with the century-old mining industry of the Keelung River through curated displays, allowing the public to gain a deeper understanding of the local cultural history.
