Houtong Visitor Center Introduction
The Houtong Visitor Center is located near the northern section of the Dalan Ancient Path and the Jinzi Monument Ancient Path, and it was completed in June 2022. The design emphasizes sustainability and integration with the surrounding environment, featuring a semi-open roof and an open corridor that allow natural light and airflow to move through the atrium. The roof is covered with a red film system that resonates with the red brick houses of the nearby village and the lush green environment, creating a harmonious blend with nature. The low-hanging roof defines the separation of spaces inside and outside the center while directing rainwater to a rain garden, echoing the natural environment and emphasizing ecological circulation. This results in a landmark effect of a splash of red amidst the green mountains and forests. The new design not only continues the function of a visitor center but also provides more resting and shaded areas for hikers and cyclists to temporarily rest and recharge. The exhibition area on the right side of the building promotes the century-old Dalan Ancient Path and the intertwined cultural history of the Keelung River's century-long mining history through curated displays, allowing the public to gain a deeper understanding of the local cultural history.
