Sanlung Temple Introduction

Sanlung Temple, commonly known as the Wangye Temple, is dedicated to the three surnamed Wangye from Chiufen, often referred to as Sanfu Qiansui. It is said that the Wangye traveled on a small boat to Xiaoliuqiu, where a thatched temple was erected, marking the beginning of Sanlung Temple. The Sanfu Qiansui ceremony held every three years is a significant event in Liuqiu Township. During this festival, the descendants of Liuqiu return home, bringing their families with them, while Liuqiu fishing boats temporarily cease operations to return to Xiaoliuqiu, filling the harbor with vessels of all sizes. On the eve of the festival, the township office also holds a Wang Ship Festival with fireworks, creating a lively atmosphere. On the island, men of all classes participate in the grand sedan chair procession, while women are responsible for providing snacks for the procession and meals for the worshippers, with beverages available for free along the route. These various customs and observances are characteristic of welcoming the Wangye in Xiaoliuqiu.
