A Must-Visit Natural Geology Classroom: The coastal erosion features at XiYin HouAo are quite rich, including sea caves, sea arches, and sea stacks, making it one of the best places to observe coastal erosion formations. Sea caves are formed when protruding capes are eroded gradually by sea water along the broken joints or the softer parts of rock layers. If the erosion continues and the sea cave is penetrated, a sea arch is formed; if the roof of the sea arch collapses due to being unable to support itself, or if the middle section of the cape is eroded and collapses, separating the front rock from the land, it results in an isolated rock column in the sea—known as a sea stack.

Hao'ao Introduction

An unmissable natural geological classroom, the coastal erosion landscape of XiYin HouAo is remarkably rich, featuring sea caves, sea arches, and sea stacks, making it one of the best places to observe coastal erosion formations. Sea caves form as the protruding headlands in the sea are eroded by water along broken joints or softer parts of the rock layers over time. If the erosion continues, and the sea cave is eroded through, it forms a sea arch. If the top of the sea arch cannot support itself and collapses, or if the middle section of the headland erodes and breaks away, it results in a sea stack, which becomes isolated in the sea.
