A Natural Geological Classroom You Must Visit The coastal erosion topography of Xi-Yin Hou-Ao is exceptionally rich, featuring sea caves, sea arches, and sea stacks, making it one of the best places to observe coastal erosion formations. Sea caves are formed as the protruding headland is eroded by seawater along broken joints or softer layers of rock over time, creating hollowed-out cliffs. If the erosion continues, a sea cave may be eroded through to form a sea arch; if the top of the sea arch cannot be supported and collapses, or if the middle section of the headland is eroded and collapses, separating the front rock from the land, a sea stack will be formed, isolated in the sea.

Hou'ao Introduction

A Must-Visit Natural Geology Classroom: The sea erosion landforms at Xiayin Hou'ao are quite rich, featuring sea caves, sea arches, and sea stacks, making it one of the best places to observe coastal geological formations. Sea caves are formed as ocean water erodes the softer sections along fractured joints or rock layers of prominent sea headlands over time. If the erosion continues and the sea cave is eroded through, it results in the formation of a sea arch. When the top of the sea arch can no longer support itself and collapses, or if the mid-section of the headland erodes away causing the rock mass to separate from the land, it creates a sea stack isolated in the ocean.
