Sea caves are formed due to the erosion of protruding headlands by seawater along broken joints or softer layers of rock over time. If the erosion continues and the sea cave becomes fully eroded, it results in a sea arch. If the top of the sea arch cannot support itself and collapses, or if the middle section of the headland is eroded away, separating the rock mass at the front from the land, it forms a sea stack isolated in the ocean.
