Shuishui Kiln Introduction
Se Shui Kiln is known for its white clay and brick-built wood-fired kiln. The "white clay" is a rare, high-quality clay that is particularly suitable for pottery production. In the early days, there was a kiln called "Hui Zi Kiln" that produced daily-use ceramics, but it ceased operations after plastic products emerged. After the 921 Earthquake, residents, with the assistance of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, established a community pottery classroom and rebuilt "Se Shui Kiln." Although it cannot fully replicate the scale of the former "Hui Zi Kiln," "Se Shui Kiln" has now become a popular leisure destination for pottery enthusiasts. The pottery produced by Se Shui Kiln is entirely unglazed, and instead utilizes the oxidation ash produced from burning wood, giving the ceramics a diverse and unique appearance. Each finished piece is one of a kind, showcasing distinctive features; in addition to the beauty of the ash fall from wood-fired ceramics, the high-quality clay also lends a rich variability in color, rivaling even that of glazed pottery. Visitors can enjoy the fun of DIY pottery in the quaint pottery classroom and create their own unique ceramic art.
