Se Shui Kiln Introduction

Se Shui Kiln is renowned for its use of white clay and brick-built kilns. The "white clay" is a rare, high-quality clay that is particularly suitable for pottery making. In the past, there was a kiln called "Hui Zai Kiln" in Se Shui that produced daily-use pottery, but it ceased operations after the advent of plastic products. After the 921 Earthquake, residents, with the assistance of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, established a community pottery classroom and rebuilt the "Se Shui Kiln." Although it has not yet fully regained the scale of the "Hui Zai Kiln," "Se Shui Kiln" has now become a popular leisure destination for pottery enthusiasts. The pottery fired at Se Shui Kiln is completely unglazed. Because it is unglazed, the unique appearance of the pottery is created by the oxidation ash produced when the wood fuel is completely burned, making each piece unique and distinctive. Besides the beauty of the ash deposit from the wood-fired kiln, the high-quality clay also provides a rich variation in color, rivaling glazed pottery. Visitors can enjoy the fun of DIY pottery in the quaint pottery classroom, crafting their own unique pieces of ceramic art.
