Baqiulas Introduction
Located in Xinyi Township, Nantou County, at an elevation of about 530 meters upstream of the Zhuoshui River, it is the former settlement of the Bunun tribe known as Wakr’as. In the Bunun language, Wakr’as means a flat riverbank with abundant water sources. During the latter part of Japanese rule, the Japanese relocated the Bunun indigenous people from this area to the present-day surroundings of Jili and Tanan for easier management, which subsequently led to Wakr’as becoming a sparsely populated area. Many remnants of old stone houses are still preserved, and the ecological landscape nearby is quite rich.
