Bakulas Introduction
Located in Xinyi Township, Nantou County, at an elevation of about 530 meters above sea level, it was the old settlement of the Bunun people known as Wakr’as. The term Wakr’as in the Bunun language means a flat riverbank with abundant water sources. During the late Japanese colonial period, to facilitate management, the Japanese relocated the Bunun indigenous people from this area to what is now known as Jili and Tannan. As a result, Wakr’as became a sparsely populated place, and many old slate house ruins are still preserved, with rich ecological landscapes nearby.
