Bakulas Introduction
Located in Xinyi Township, Nantou County, at the upper reaches of the Zhuoshui River and an altitude of about 530 meters, it is an old community of the Bunun people known as Wakr’as. In the Bunun language, Wakr’as means a flat riverbank area with abundant water sources. In the late Japanese colonial period, the Japanese relocated the Bunun indigenous people from this area to present-day Jilong and Tannan for better management, leading to Wakr’as becoming a largely uninhabited place. Many old slate house ruins are still preserved here, and the surrounding ecological landscape is quite rich.
