Tianchang Dijiou Bridge Introduction

The "Tianchang-Dijiu Bridge," located in Chukou, Fanlu Township, Chiayi County, is the most prominent gateway landmark to the Alishan area. These two suspension bridges are situated alongside the upper stream of the Bajhang Creek, forming the most representative scenery of Chukou between the green mountains and flowing water, and they also serve as a resting stop for many travelers before heading up the mountain. ⚠️ Important Announcement: To ensure visitor safety and adapt to the current situation of the facilities, we would like to remind you: "Tianchang Bridge": permanently closed from February 29, 2024. "Dijiu Bridge": closed from January 1, 2025. (Travelers are advised to comply with the relevant announcements and refrain from entering closed areas.) The origin and naming of these two suspension bridges can be traced back to the Showa period during Japanese rule, specifically Showa year 12 (1937). At that time, to commemorate the birthday of the Emperor and Empress, they were specifically named after royal celebrations: Tianchang Bridge for the Emperor's birthday (Tianchang Festival) and Dijiu Bridge for the Empress's birthday (Dijiu Festival). This special background adds a unique historical significance to the two bridges. The romantic landscape amidst the mountains and the folklore surrounding the bridges create a geographical sense of layering: Dijiu Bridge is located next to Chukou Bridge at 34K on Provincial Highway 18 (Alishan Highway), while Tianchang Bridge is positioned at a higher level. In the past, these two bridges were connected by pathways, forming a classic route for travelers to enjoy the scenery. Due to their names, there has been a romantic saying in the community that "walking hand in hand across Tianchang and Dijiu, lovers shall end up together," which has added much to the local allure. Although both bridges are currently closed for safety reasons, the Tianchang-Dijiu Bridge remains a highly representative sight in the Chukou area. Visitors can still enjoy the view of the Bajhang Creek Valley from nearby platforms or plan a simple cultural itinerary at the neighboring Longyin Temple, experiencing the tranquil atmosphere of the mountains before officially entering the winding routes of the Alishan Highway.
