Maolin Butterfly Valley Ecological Park Introduction
Maolin Butterfly Valley Ecological Park is located on Maolin Lane in the Maolin District and serves as a site for butterfly watching activities. Walking along the trails in the park will lead you to the butterfly viewing trail. "Purple Butterfly Valley" is not a geographic location; it is actually a phenomenon where various species of butterflies cluster together for wintering. This phenomenon is primarily found in the mid-to-low elevation mountainous areas of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung, home to the Paiwan and Rukai indigenous peoples. From October to February each year, over one million purple butterflies come to the warm and sheltered valleys at the foot of Mount Dawu, a sacred mountain for the Rukai and Paiwan peoples in southern Taiwan. The Maolin "Purple Butterfly Valley" is on par with the "Monarch Butterfly Valley" in the Americas as a world-class natural asset and is recognized as one of the two massive "wintering butterfly valleys" in the world. It has also been rated as a must-visit attraction with the highest level of three Michelin stars in the Green Guide to Taiwan! It is recommended to spend about 3 hours here, strolling along the butterfly viewing trail to Zisali Trail in the Purple Butterfly Ecological Park, where you can see different species of purple butterflies and a variety of brightly colored butterflies.
