Maolin Butterfly Valley Ecological Park (Purple Butterfly Valley) Introduction
Maolin Purple Butterfly Ecological Park is located on Maolin Lane in Maolin District and serves as a site for butterfly watching activities. Walking along the trails within the park, visitors can access the butterfly viewing trail. "Purple Butterfly Valley" is not a geographic location, but an ecological phenomenon where various species of butterflies congregate for the winter. "Purple Butterfly Valley" is primarily distributed in the low to mid-elevation mountainous areas of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung, inhabited by the Paiwan and Rukai tribes. From October to February of the following year, over a million purple butterflies come to South Taiwan, specifically the warm and sheltered valleys at the foot of Dawu Mountain, which is a sacred mountain for the Rukai and Paiwan tribes. Maolin's "Purple Butterfly Valley" is renowned alongside North America's "Monarch Butterfly Valley" and both are recognized as world-class natural assets, featuring among the two major "overwintering butterfly valleys" in the world. It has also been listed as a must-visit attraction with the highest three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Taiwan! The recommended visit duration is about 3 hours, and you can stroll along the butterfly viewing trail towards the Zishali Trail within the Purple Butterfly Ecological Park, where you can see different species of purple butterflies and a variety of colorful butterfly species.
