Dona Stone House Introduction
The Donar Slate House is located in Donar Village, Maolin District. Early residents of the village sourced materials locally from the Wenshu Creek, using black-gray slate as the building material. The black-gray slate is divided into male and female stones; the female stone weathers over time, while the male stone is darker, heavier, and thicker, primarily used for rooftops or bedding. The residents of Donar Village work together in a spirit of mutual assistance to stack the slates and build the houses. Some slate houses feature totems of the hundred-paced viper on the door lintels or pillars, symbolizing the status of leaders or nobles. Living inside the slate houses keeps them warm in winter and cool in summer. It is recommended to spend about 30 to 40 minutes here, as visitors can admire the architectural features of the slate houses and take a walk to nearby attractions such as the chief's house and Donar Elementary School.
