Dona Slate House Introduction
The Dona Slate House is located in Dona Village, Maolin District. In the early days, the ancestors of the tribe utilized local materials from the Wenshu Stream, using black-gray slate as the building material. The black-gray slate is divided into male and female slates; the female slates weather over time, while the male slates are darker, heavier, and thicker, mostly used for the roofs or beds of the slate houses. The residents of Dona Village embody a spirit of mutual assistance, working together to help stack the slates to build the houses. Some of the slate houses feature totems of the hundred-step snake on the door lintels or columns, symbolizing the identity and status of leaders or nobles. Living in a slate house provides warmth in winter and coolness in summer. It is recommended to spend about 30-40 minutes here, where you can appreciate the architectural features of the slate house and also take a walk to nearby attractions such as the chief's house and Dona Elementary School.
