Dona Village Introduction

Donan Village is located at the end of Highway 132 in Maolin District, making it the deepest village in the area. Donan was formerly known as "Tunzi," which is a transliteration from Japanese, while the residents refer to their settlement as "Kunadavan." Donan Village is composed of several small settlements and is currently one of the villages in Maolin District where the traditional culture of the Rukai people is best preserved. Surrounded by mountains, there is a wide, flat plateau behind the settlement where unique black rice is cultivated. Every July, a Black Rice Festival (Tabesengane) is held to commemorate the blessings from heaven and pray for a bountiful harvest, followed by a harvest season celebration (Tapakadrawane) in November. Another unique cultural aspect of Donan Village is the millet love bundles, made from red, yellow, and green yarn, which are tied with millet. In the past, before festivals, young men from the village would prepare these millet bundles and deliver them to the homes of girls they admired, expressing their affection. Therefore, the more millet bundles a household has, the more popular their daughter is considered. It is recommended to spend about an hour here, where visitors can explore on their own or book a guided tour to visit the stone houses, the chief's house, and the headhunter's altar. When visiting, please try to avoid disturbing the daily lives of the villagers.
