Peace Island Geological Park Introduction
Peace Island Geopark is located on the eastern side of Keelung Harbor, serving as the gateway to Keelung Port and is also one of the earliest places in northern Taiwan where Westerners set foot. This area was originally a settlement of the Ketagalan people and later designated as a military control zone. Currently, parts of the coastal region have been opened as Peace Island Geopark. The main recreational highlight of Peace Island Geopark is the significant coastal erosion landforms within the park. The geology of Peace Island consists of sandstone, featuring remarkable rock formations along the coastline that have been shaped by long-term wave erosion and wind erosion, resulting in unique topographical features such as wave-cut platforms, tofu rock, wave-cut gullies, wave-cut cliffs, weathering windows, sea caves, mushroom rocks, Lion Head Rock, and Bear Head Rock. The most famous formations are the "Thousand Layer Cloth" and "Ten Thousand People Pile" (mushroom rocks). In addition to the stunning topography, the fossilized remains and trace fossils of exposed strata are treasures of Peace Island geology. To protect these valuable geological resources, the rock control area is opened to the public through scheduled and reserved guided tours. Furthermore, Peace Island Geopark provides outdoor ponds and beach areas for both children and adults to enjoy swimming, playing in the water, and building sandcastles. The tidal pool allows people to observe various intertidal zone organisms, constructed with minimal artificial facilities to reduce damage to nature and maintain ecological balance. After being incorporated into the North Coast National Scenic Area, special attention was given to creating an accessible environment during the renovation process. From the parking lot, viewing platforms, beach area, wading pools, to accessible pathways and restrooms, every small detail aims to provide greater convenience for visitors with mobility challenges. In 2018, it won the Svayam Accessibility Awards for Best Accessible Tourist Attraction, dedicated to creating the most comfortable recreational environment for every visitor.
