83 Artillery Battle Victory Memorial Introduction
Located at the entrance of Hujia Village in Little Kinmen, the "823 Shelling Victory Memorial" is an important landmark symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the frontline soldiers and civilians. The main body of the memorial is a massive shell, painted in green and white military camouflage, standing on a circular pedestal. The shell is inscribed with the golden words "823 Shelling Victory Memorial," and the center of the pedestal is adorned with the Blue Sky with a White Sun emblem, showcasing a steadfast commitment to protection and honor. This memorial was built to commemorate the "823 Shelling" of 1958. During that year, the People's Liberation Army of China fired over 470,000 shells at Kinmen and Little Kinmen in an attempt to capture the islands, reducing Little Kinmen to ruins. However, in this fierce battle, the local military and civilians, with their resilient willpower and united spirit, held onto this land, writing a crucial chapter in the military history of the Taiwan Strait. Today, the memorial serves not only as a witness to history but also as a spiritual stronghold for the people of Little Kinmen in facing challenges and upholding their beliefs. Standing in front of the monument, one can still feel the thrill and indomitable will under the shelling of that time, making it an essential attraction for visitors to Little Kinmen.
