The fourth generation owner of Hsin Fu Chen, Wu Hong-Yi, said that his great-grandmother originally sold meat rice dumplings at a street stall next to the Cheng Huang Temple. Due to the fragrant flavors of her spices, she gained popularity among both new and old customers, leading to a prosperous business. Encouraged by her customers, at only twenty years old, great-grandmother Wu Zhang-Huan purchased land at the current site to start her business, establishing what is today known as "Hsin Fu Chen Trading Co." During the process of making meat rice dumplings, her creative ideas of "green onion fragrance, filling fragrance, and lard fragrance" were transformed into the fragrance of the rice cake. After many trials and research, she finally pioneered the Hsinchu rice cake - the bamboo fence cake, which has maintained its reputation for a hundred years. Hsin Fu Chen Trading Co. offers an array of items that can be overwhelming, among which a few are widely recognized for their uniqueness: bamboo fence cake, Chai Su cake, steamed egg cake, etc. The bamboo fence cake has five distinctive features - a crispy skin, a soft filling, just the right sweetness, a rich aroma, and it doesn’t feel greasy. Besides its unique taste, the bamboo fence cake is not expensive, priced at only twenty-five NT dollars. Other items like the Chai Su cake are inspired by the shape of ancient women's hair combs combined with traditional creativity. Tourists visiting Hsinchu must come to taste these delicacies.
