Hsin Fu Chen Commercial Firm Introduction
The fourth-generation owner of Hsin Fu Chen, Wu Hong-Yi, stated that his great-grandmother originally made a living by selling rice dumplings at a street stall next to the Chenghuang Temple. Due to the fragrant flavor and quality of her ingredients, she gained popularity among both old and new customers, leading to a thriving business. Encouraged by her patrons, at the young age of twenty, her great-grandmother Wu Zhang-Huan purchased land at the current location to start her own business, establishing what is now known as "Hsin Fu Chen Commercial Firm". During her process of making rice dumplings, her creative ideas of "scallion fragrance, ingredient fragrance, and lard fragrance" transformed into the aroma of cake. After numerous trials, she finally invented the century-old celebrated Hsinchu pork cake – the Zhuqian cake. The offerings at Hsin Fu Chen are numerous and can be overwhelming, but a few items are widely recognized for their unique features: Zhuqian cake, Chaishao cake, and steamed egg cake, among others. The Zhuqian cake has five characteristics: a crispy skin, a soft filling, just the right amount of sweetness, a strong aroma, and a non-greasy feel. Besides its unique flavor, the Zhuqian cake is also affordable, priced at only twenty-five NT dollars each. Other items like the Chaishao cake are inspired by the shape of traditional women's hair combs along with inherited creativity. Visitors to Hsinchu must certainly come here to taste these delicacies.
