De Yu Fish Ball

Taipei Foods

In 1953, a young couple, Hong Bing-Jian and Hong Hsu-Feng, opened their first shop beside the Fuyou Temple (Mazu Temple). Every morning at five o'clock, the small shop was crowded with shoppers, buying fresh fish caught daily from the Tamsui Fish Harbor. Under the skilled hands of the master chef, the excess gills and scales were removed from the fish, and each type of fresh fish product was paired with a unique recipe, such as spinach fish balls and nutritious fish crisps enriched with DHA and calcium. The fish paste products from Deyu were highly popular and were also the designated ingredients used by the famous Tamsui A-Gei old shop. In 1963, the Hong family took over the famous landmark "Red House" in Tamsui. In the face of aggressive development by corporations, the Hong family decided to preserve the historical value of the "Red House." In 1999, based on the principle of restoring its original appearance, the "Red House," constructed in the late 19th century and spanning three centuries, continued to stand on the hillside at the ferry pier, serving as a century witness to Tamsui's development. When visiting Deyu, in addition to purchasing fish balls and fish crisps, don't forget to walk up the stairs in the alley next to the store to admire the beauty of the red brick architecture and experience the dedication of this old shop rooted in Tamsui.
