Te Yu Fish Balls Introduction
In 1953, a young couple, Hong Bing-Jian and Hong Hsu-Feng, opened their first shop beside the Fuyou Temple. Every morning at five, the small shop would be crowded with buyers. Fresh fish caught in Tamsui Fish Harbor was skillfully prepared by experienced chefs, removing excess gills and scales. Each type of fresh fish product was paired with a unique recipe, such as spinach fish balls and nutritious fish crackers with added DHA and calcium. The fish paste products from Deyu were highly popular and were designated as the ingredients used by the famous Tamsui A-gei shop. In 1963, the Hong family took over the famous Tamsui landmark "Red House." Amid the rampant development by the consortium, the Hong family decided to preserve the historical value of the "Red House." In 1999, they restored its original appearance, allowing the "Red House," built in the late 19th century and spanning three centuries, to continue standing on the hillside of the ferry pier, serving as a witness to Tamsui's development. When visiting Deyu, in addition to purchasing fish balls and fish crackers, don't forget to walk up the stairs in the alley beside the shop to admire the beauty of the red brick architecture and experience the dedication of the old shop rooted in Tamsui.
