When visiting Tamsui, many people enjoy a cup of traditional sour plum drink. Every vendor offers a different flavor, but Xinglong Sour Plum, made from homegrown plums in Nantou, has gained media attention, including coverage from the Japanese magazine "JTB," and is well-loved by both Japanese tourists and locals. Xinglong originally started as Tamsui's first stationery store, which sold a variety of goods. As large shopping malls began to move into Tamsui and consumer habits changed, Xu Suliang, a Nantou native, introduced her family's handmade plums and transformed the store into a specialty shop for sour plum drinks and plum products. The products contain no saccharin or preservatives, are natural and healthy, and are not overly sweet or salty. Last spring, Xinglong Sour Plum underwent a renovation led by Xu Suliang's daughter, who studies interior design, and her son assisted in creating a tailored display cabinet and stall at the entrance. The bright new style transformed the store's previously dark and cluttered image, resulting in a noticeable increase in business. The next step is to update the product packaging, ensuring that the products are not only authentic and of high quality but also visually appealing to attract tourists to taste this truly local delicacy.
