lala Ban Xinshe Banana Fiber Workshop

Hualien Foods

With the mission of inheriting the cultural craftsmanship of banana fiber, this initiative utilizes the native material of banana silk fibers to express the spirit and cultural values of the Kavalan people, seeking opportunities to develop the cultural industry of the Kavalan tribe. After the construction of the East Coast Highway (Provincial Highway 11) began in 1968, the tribe quickly became engulfed in "modernization." With the influx of various materials, the banana silk craft began to decline. Fortunately, during the movement for the revival of the Kavalan people's identity and culture, the elders have reintroduced the traditional skills of handloom weaving. Through the processes of banana planting, cutting, scraping the fibers, sun-drying, separating the strands, twisting, winding, arranging the yarn, and weaving, a profound cultural craftsmanship has been accumulated.
