Lala Ban Xinshe Banana Silk Workshop

Hualien Foods

With the mission to pass down the banana silk craft culture, the use of native banana fiber expresses the spirit and cultural values of the Kavalan people and seeks to create opportunities for the Kavalan cultural industry. After the construction of the Huadong Coastal Highway (Provincial Highway 11) began in 1968, the community was rapidly drawn into "modernization." As various materials flowed in, the banana silk craft began to decline. Fortunately, during the resurgence and cultural revitalization movements of the Kavalan people, the elders reintroduced the traditional techniques of handloom weaving. The processes involved in banana cultivation, harvesting, scraping fibers, drying, threading, twisting, winding, warping, and weaving have accumulated a profound craft culture.
