lala Ban Xinshe Banana Fiber Workshop

Hualien Foods

Entrusted with the mission of preserving the craft culture of banana silk, the fiber derived from raw banana materials expresses the spirit and cultural values of the Kavalan Tribe, seeking to create opportunities for the cultural industry of the Kavalan people. After the construction of the East Coast Highway (Provincial Highway 11) began in 1968, the community quickly became caught up in "modernization," and with the influx of various goods, the art of banana silk craftsmanship began to decline. Fortunately, alongside the revitalization and cultural revival movements of the Kavalan people, the elders have reintroduced traditional techniques of weaving with the handloom. Through the processes of planting, harvesting, scraping, drying, separating strands, twisting threads, winding, warping, and weaving banana fibers, a rich cultural craftsmanship has been accumulated.
