Matsu Harbor Introduction
Mengao Harbor is the maritime gateway to Dongju, with a helicopter airport nearby; it is only a 10-minute walk to the busiest village, Daping. After the harbor was completed, due to the gathering of fish, it has become the safest sea fishing spot in Dongju. In the Matsu dialect, "Meng" means "fishing net," as fishermen used to repair and dry their nets here, thus the name. Due to population outflow, only a few households live here now. Additionally, since Dongju Island is located at the mouth of the Min River, the river's sand has accumulated at Mengao over the years, creating a high-quality sandy beach that is broad and flat, making it the best place for summer water activities. At night, Mengao Beach often glows with sparkling microorganisms, allowing visitors not only to swim at night but also to "step on star sand" on the beach, making it an excellent choice for night outings in Dongju. Not far from Mengao Harbor is a gently sloping marine terrace known as the Chipinglong archaeological site, where a large number of pottery fragments, shell mounds, and stone tool fragments have been discovered, some dating back over six thousand years to prehistoric times, serving as a record of human life in prehistoric times.
