Mengao Harbor Introduction

Méng'ǎo Port is the maritime transportation gateway for Dongju, with a helicopter airport nearby; it is only a 10-minute walk from the bustling Daping Village. After the port was completed, the gathering of fish made this area the safest sea fishing spot in Dongju. In Matsu dialect, "Méng" means "fishing net," as fishermen used to repair and dry their fishing nets here, hence the name. Due to population outflow, only a few families reside here now. Additionally, since Dongju Island is located at the mouth of the Min River, the river's sand has accumulated over the years at Méng'ǎo, forming a wide, flat beach with fine white sand, making it the best place for travelers to enjoy swimming and playing in the water during summer. At night, Méng'ǎo Beach often features shimmering bioluminescent microorganisms, allowing visitors to night swim and "step on starlight" on the beach, making it an excellent choice for nighttime activities in Dongju. Not far from Méng'ǎo Port is a gently sloping coastal platform known as the Chihpinglong archaeological site, where a large number of pottery shards, shell middens, and stone tool fragments have been discovered, dating back over six thousand years to prehistoric times, serving as a record of human life in that era.
