Matsu Harbor Introduction
Méng'āo Port is the sea transportation gateway to Dongju, and a helicopter airport is nearby; it is only a 10-minute walk to the busiest Daping Village. After the completion of the port, due to the aggregation of fish, it has also become the safest sea fishing spot in Dongju. The word “Méng” in Matsu dialect means “fishing net,” as fishermen once frequently repaired and dried their nets here, thus giving the place its name. Due to population outflow, only a few households currently reside here. Furthermore, because Dongju Island is located at the mouth of the Min River, the river sand accumulates in Meng'ao over the years, forming a wide, flat, high-quality sandy beach that is the best spot for travelers to enjoy swimming in the summer. At Meng'ao Beach at night, there are often bioluminescent microorganisms sparkling, allowing visitors to swim at night and "walk on star sand" on the beach, making it an excellent choice for nighttime activities in Dongju. Not far from Meng'ao Port, there is a gently sloping coastal terrace area, which is the recently discovered Chipinglong archaeological site. A large amount of pottery shards, shell middens, and stone tool fragments have been found here, dating back over six thousand years to prehistoric times, serving as a record of human life in ancient times.
