West Niu Islet Introduction
Xiniu Islet, also known as Rhinoceros Islet, is the most famous intertidal zone in Dongju, composed of various geological features such as beaches, mudflats, pebble beaches, and reefs. Its name comes from the island's shape, which resembles a rhinoceros. During low tide, the island separates from and connects to the main island, creating the scenic view of "land-connected island." Juguang is located outside the Min River estuary in Fujian Province, right at the boundary between freshwater and seawater, fostering a rich variety of shellfish and seafood. The area is famous for its harvest of clams (flower clams), purple sea urchins, Buddha’s hand, sea helmets, nori, conchs, and octopuses, making it a rich source of fresh produce, known as a natural refrigerator. During lunar spring tide, shellfish gatherers flock to the area, leading to bountiful harvests. Xiniu Islet is also home to the rare seaside plant in Matsu, the sea hibiscus, which is used in medicinal wine to treat rheumatism and other chronic diseases. The reefs are primarily composed of rock, making it one of the best fishing spots in Dongju, abundant with seasonal fish like black grouper, black mullet, and bass, a desired location for anglers! To experience the miraculous sight of Moses parting the sea at Xiniu Islet, it is essential to calculate the timings of the tide (the round trip takes about an hour), wear non-slip shoes, and it is recommended to stay alert to the changing tides, with a local guide to ensure safety.
