Xiuniu Islet Introduction
Xiniu Island, also known as Rhinoceros Island, is the most famous intertidal zone in Dongju, composed of different geological formations such as sandy beaches, mudflats, pebble beaches, and reefs. The island's name derives from its shape resembling a rhinoceros. During the ebb and flow of the tides, the island separates from and reconnects with the main island, creating the "land-connected island" landscape. Ju Guang is located outside the estuary of the Min River in Fujian Province, where freshwater and seawater meet, fostering a rich variety of shellfish and seafood. The area is known for its abundant harvests of clams (flower clams), purple sea urchins, Buddha's hand, sea steel helmets, seaweed, conchs, and octopuses, making it a natural refrigerator. During the lunar new tide, shell collectors flock to the area for great yields. On Xiniu Island, there is also the rare coastal plant of Matsu - Sea Hibiscus, which can be brewed into medicinal wine to treat rheumatic diseases. The island's reefs are mainly composed of rocks, making it one of the best fishing spots in Dongju, teeming with seasonal fish such as black grouper, black porgy, and bass, and is a sought-after destination for anglers. To experience the wonders of the Moses Crossing at Xiniu Island, one needs to calculate the tide timings (the round trip takes about one hour) and wear non-slip shoes. It's also advisable to keep an eye on the tidal changes and have a local guide lead the way for safety.
