Xinyu Island Introduction
Xiniu Island, also known as Rhinoceros Island, is the most famous intertidal zone outside Dongju, made up of various geological formations including sandy beaches, mudflats, pebble beaches, and reefs. Its name comes from the island's shape, which resembles a rhinoceros. As the tide rises and falls, the island connects and separates from the main island, creating a "land-connected island" landscape. Juguang is located just outside the mouth of the Min River in Fujian Province, where fresh and saltwater meet, resulting in a rich variety of shellfish and seafood. The area is known for abundant marine clam (flower clam), purple sea urchin, Buddha's hand, sea steel helmet, laver, whelk, and octopus, making it a recognized natural refrigerator. During the lunar big tide periods, clam diggers flock to collect bountiful catches. Xiniu Island is also home to Matsu's rare coastal plant, the sea hibiscus, which can be used to brew medicinal liquor for rheumatic diseases. The island reefs are primarily composed of rocks, making it one of the excellent fishing spots in Dongju, home to seasonal fish such as black grouper, black mullet, and bass, which are highly sought after by anglers. To experience the stunning sights of Moses parting the sea at Xiniu Island, you need to time your visit with the tide schedule (a round trip takes about an hour) and wear non-slip shoes. It is recommended to stay aware of the tidal changes and to be accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide for safety.
