Xiyu Island Introduction
Xiniu Islet, also known as Rhinoceros Islet, is the most famous intertidal zone in Dongju. Composed of beaches, mudflats, pebble beaches, and reef rocks, it is named for its shape resembling a rhinoceros. The island separates from and connects with the main island during the ebb and flow of the tide, creating a landscape known as "land-connected island." Ju Guang is located just outside the estuary of the Min River in Fujian Province, where freshwater meets seawater, nurturing a rich variety of shellfish and seafood. This area is renowned for its abundance of clams (flower clams), purple sea urchins, Buddha's hand fruit, sea steel helmets, nori, sea snails, and octopus, offering a wide variety and fresh flavors, recognized as a natural refrigerator. During the lunar calendar's tidal periods, shell collectors gather in droves to reap a bountiful harvest. On Xiniu Islet, there are also rare coastal plants unique to Matsu, such as sea hibiscus, which can be used to brew medicinal wine to treat rheumatism and other chronic illnesses. The island's reefs are primarily rocky, making it one of the best fishing spots in Dongju, rich in seasonal fish such as blackfish, blackhead fish, and bass, making it a coveted destination for anglers. To experience the miraculous sight of Moses parting the sea at Xiniu Islet, visitors need to time their visit according to the tidal schedule (which takes about an hour round trip), wear non-slip shoes, and be mindful of the changing tides. It is advisable to be guided by a local tour guide for safety.
