West Cow Islet Introduction
Xi Niu Yu, also known as Rhinoceros Islet, is the most famous intertidal zone in Dongjyu. It is composed of various geological features including sandy beaches, mudflats, pebble beaches, and reefs. Named for its shape resembling a rhinoceros, the islet separates from and connects with the main island during the rise and fall of the tides, creating the picturesque landscape known as "land-connected island." Ju Guang, located just outside the Min River mouth in Fujian Province, is where freshwater meets seawater, yielding a rich variety of shellfish and seafood. The local specialties include clams (flower clams), purple sea urchins, Buddha's hand, sea steel helmets, laver, sea snails, and octopuses, making it a recognized natural refrigerator. During the lunar calendar's high tide periods, many shell collectors flock here for a bountiful harvest. Xi Niu Yu is also home to the rare coastal plant native to Matsu – the sea hibiscus, which is used to make medicinal wine for treating rheumatism and other chronic ailments. The islet, primarily composed of rocks, is one of Dongjyu's prime fishing spots. It is rich in seasonal fish such as black grouper, black-haired fish, and bass, making it a sought-after location for anglers. To experience the spectacular sight of Moses parting the sea at Xi Niu Yu, one must carefully calculate the timings of the tides (the round trip takes about an hour), wear non-slip shoes, and it is advised to remain vigilant about tidal changes while being led by a knowledgeable local guide for safety.
