Dapu Stone Carvings Introduction
Dapu Stone Carvings, an important historical site recording achievements, is a third-level historic monument in the Taiwan-Fujian region. It is located at the southernmost tip of Dongju Island and was discovered by the National Army in 1953. To prevent damage to the monument, a pavilion named Huai Gu Pavilion was built for protection. The inscriptions on the rock surface document the significant accomplishments of General Shen Yourong during the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty, who captured 69 pirates on Dongju without losing a single soldier. The characters were written by Dong Yingju, the then Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Works, preserving a valuable testimony to the rampant pirate activity in Matsu's early history. From the Dapu Stone Carvings, one can gaze out at the encircled coastal defense fort, and by stepping onto the wooden boardwalk leading to the seaside, visitors can explore the rugged rocks, which hold a unique charm. The Dapu Stone Carvings not only record the glorious military achievements of the famous General Shen Yourong but are also said by local people to be a treasure map. If one can decipher the hints embedded in the text, they might find hidden treasures somewhere on Dongju Island. Visitors are encouraged to use their wits while visiting Dapu Stone Carvings! Note: Visitors are reminded that the wooden boardwalk is near the seashore and has been subject to long-term wind and rain erosion, so please be cautious and walk slowly. When playing in the rocky areas by the sea, be aware of the tides and heed safety precautions.
