Dapu Rock Carvings Introduction
Dapu Stone Carvings is an important historical monument that records significant achievements. It is classified as a third-level cultural heritage site in the Taiwan-Fukien region, located at the southern tip of Dongju Island. Discovered by the National Army in 1953, a memorial pavilion was built to protect the site from damage. The inscriptions on the rock face commemorate General Shen Yourong's notable achievement during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era, where he captured 69 pirate invaders without incurring any casualties. The text was penned by Dong Yingju, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Works at that time, serving as a precious testament to the early history of rampant piracy in Matsu. From the Dapu Stone Carvings, one can see the surrounding coastline of Gui Tiao Fort. Visitors can walk down a wooden path to explore the rocky beach, where unique rock formations await discovery. The Dapu Stone Carvings not only celebrate the illustrious military accomplishments of General Shen Yourong but are also said to be a treasure map. It is believed that decoding the hints embedded within the text may lead to hidden treasures located somewhere on Dongju Island. Visitors are encouraged to use their intellect while visiting the Dapu Stone Carvings! Note: Visitors should note that the wooden path is near the sea and has been weathered by wind and rain over time. Please walk carefully and be mindful of tidal changes when exploring the rocky areas by the shore for safety.
