Zhenhai Temple Introduction
The Zhenhai Temple, located next to Zhenhai Park in Pingtung City, was formerly known as Gonghetang. Established in 1984, it has developed its current scale over the course of nineteen years. The temple's most notable feature is its architectural technique, which utilizes shipbuilding skills, allowing for smooth lines, graceful curves, and balanced arcs throughout the structure, showcasing Pingtung's maritime culture. In addition to the vibrant shipbuilding techniques, the main hall's ceiling features painted designs imitating European churches, as well as many three-dimensional wooden sculptures created by renowned local sculptor Cai Minghai and his apprentices from Xinyuan Township. The intricacy of these carvings is evident in the delicate folds of clothing and the detailed hair strands of the wooden figures. To highlight local characteristics, various carvings in the temple carry specific meanings: aquatic shapes accentuate Donggang's maritime culture, while the sixteen celestial maidens symbolize the harmony of yin and yang. The Chinese knot and jade pendant decorations represent traditional Chinese artistry, and the walls inside the temple are adorned with various calligraphic styles, exuding a strong artistic atmosphere. The Zhenhai Temple is not only a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural art but also a manifestation of strength and beauty.
