Zhenhai Temple Introduction
Zhenhai Palace, located next to Zhenhai Park in Pingtung City, was formerly known as Gonghe Hall and was built in 1984. Over its nineteen years of history, it has grown to its current scale. The most distinctive feature of its architecture lies in the use of shipbuilding techniques known as "boat building," which allows for smooth lines, graceful curves, and balanced arcs throughout the temple, fully showcasing Pingtung's maritime culture. In addition to the vibrant shipbuilding craftsmanship, the ceiling of the main hall features painted decorations mimicking European churches, along with various 3D wooden sculptures, all crafted by renowned local sculptor Cai Minghai and his disciples from Xinyuan Township in Pingtung County. The delicate details of the wooden carvings, such as the folds of clothing and clear strands of hair, highlight their meticulous craftsmanship. To emphasize local characteristics, each carving within the temple holds significance; the aquatic-themed designs reflect Donggang's maritime culture, the sixteen flying maidens symbolize the harmony of yin and yang, and the Chinese knot and jade pendant decorations represent traditional Chinese art. Additionally, the walls within the temple are adorned with various ink calligraphy, creating a rich artistic atmosphere. Zhenhai Palace is not only a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural art but also a representation of strength and beauty.
