Zhenhai Palace Introduction
The Zhenhai Temple, located next to Zhenhai Park in Pingtung City, was formerly known as Gonghe Hall and was established in 1984. After nineteen years of development, it has reached its current scale. The most distinctive feature of the architecture is that it employs the shipbuilding techniques of "ship carpenters," allowing for smooth lines, gentle curves, and balanced arcs throughout the temple, fully showcasing Pingtung's maritime culture. In addition to the vibrant shipbuilding skills, the main hall has a ceiling that imitates the stained glass of European churches, as well as numerous 3D wooden carvings. These sculptures are crafted by renowned woodcarver Cai Minghai and his apprentices from Xinyuan Township, Pingtung County, and the intricate details can be seen in the folds of the clothing of the carved figures and the clarity of the hair. To highlight local characteristics, each carving in the temple has its own significance; the aquatic motifs reflect Donggang's maritime culture, the sixteen flying maidens symbolize the harmony of Yin and Yang, the Chinese knot and jade pendants represent traditional Chinese art, and various calligraphic pieces hang on the walls, exuding a strong artistic atmosphere. The Zhenhai Temple is not only a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural art but also a manifestation of strength and beauty.
