Xuhai Grassland Introduction

Xu Hai Grassland, also known as Zhongzheng Great Grassland, is located in Xu Hai Village, Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It lies on the gentle slope of Mudanbi Mountain, north of the Xu Hai River estuary, adjacent to Mudan Bay on the Pacific coast, covering a total area of about 80 hectares. It is still a natural landscape area that maintains its primitive appearance. The landscape area is planned with three scenic trails: the Grassland Trail, Mudanbi Mountain Trail, and Ecology Trail, each presenting different layers of scenery. The Grassland Trail is approximately 900 meters long and is of easy walking difficulty, suitable for leisure activities. As the trail winds its way up, visitors can see sprawling patches of lush green grasslands, occasionally accompanied by a gentle breeze that brings the soft rustling sound of the grass, creating a rhythmical, serene, and soothing atmosphere. The greenery enhances the mood, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the sea and the sunrise. The Mudanbi Mountain Trail, approximately 400 meters long, is lined with low shrubs such as Hengchun Waxberry, Jintan, Myrica rubra, and White Buttonbush. With a normal walking pace, it takes about 10 minutes to complete, with only a slightly steep section to conquer. After passing the highest point of Mudanbi Mountain at an elevation of 232 meters, the remaining path becomes much easier. The Ecology Trail is about 1,500 meters long and is bordered by a variety of beautiful wild plants such as Sea Camellia, Wild Peony, Hengchun Mountain Osmanthus, Portwood, Taiwanese Orchid, and Fine-leaved Breadfruit. Butterflies, insects, and reptiles are often spotted along the way, making the longer walk far from dull. At the intersection connecting the Grassland Trail and the Mudanbi Mountain Trail, there is a sea-view pavilion, which is an excellent vantage point. In front lies the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, while nearby, the beautifully crescent-shaped Mudan Bay is adorned with round pebbles on the shore. The simple Xu Hai Fishing Port and the mysterious Aihai Stone Slab Houses are nearby, making this "fishing village, ruins, waves, and strange stones" another beautiful destination for exploration.
