Xu Hai Grassland Introduction

Xu Hai Grassland, also known as Zhi Cheng Great Grassland, is located in Xu Hai Village, Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It is situated on the gentle slope of Mudanbi Mountain to the north of the mouth of Xu Hai River, adjacent to Mudan Bay on the Pacific coast, covering an area of approximately 80 hectares. It remains a natural landscape area that retains its original appearance. The scenic area has three designated viewing trails: the Grassland Trail, Mudanbi Mountain Trail, and Ecology Trail, each presenting different layers of scenery. The Grassland Trail is approximately 900 meters long and has a low walking difficulty, making it suitable for casual outings. As the trail winds upwards, visitors are greeted with expansive stretches of lush green grasslands, occasionally accompanied by gentle breezes that bring forth the soothing sounds of rustling grass, creating a regular, tranquil, and soothing atmosphere. The vibrant greenery uplifts the spirits, making it a perfect spot to observe the sea and enjoy the sunrise. The Mudanbi Mountain Trail, bordered by low shrubs such as Hengchun wax berries, golden camellias, and white myrtle, stretches about 400 meters. With an average walking pace, it takes about 10 minutes to complete, and the only challenge is a slightly steep ascent. After reaching the highest point of Mudanbi Mountain at an elevation of 232 meters, the subsequent journey becomes much easier. The Ecology Trail is approximately 1,500 meters long, lined with various wild plants including beautiful sea acacias, wild peonies, Hengchun sweet osmanthus, coastal wood hibiscus, Taiwan orchid, and snake fruit. Visitors may also encounter butterflies, insects, and reptiles along the way. Although the distance is longer, the walk is anything but boring. At the fork connecting the Grassland Trail and Mudanbi Mountain Trail, there is a sea-view pavilion, which undoubtedly serves as an excellent vantage point. In front is the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, while nearby is the beautifully crescent-shaped Mudan Bay, with its shores adorned with round pebbles. The quaint Xu Hai Fishing Harbor and the mysterious slate houses of the Aijin people are also nearby, offering a charming combination of "fishing village, historical sites, waves, and unique stones," making it another delightful destination worth exploring.
