Xuhai Grassland Introduction

Xuhai Prairie, also known as Zhongzheng Great Prairie, is located in Xuhai Village, Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It is situated on the gentle slopes of Mudan Bi Mountain, north of the Xuhai River estuary, adjacent to Mudan Bay on the Pacific coast. The total area is approximately 80 hectares, and it remains a natural scenic area that retains its original appearance. The scenic area has planned three viewing trails: the Prairie Trail, the Mudan Bi Mountain Trail, and the Ecology Trail, each presenting different scenic layers. The Prairie Trail is approximately 900 meters long and has a low level of difficulty, classified as a leisure level. As the trail winds upward, visitors will see stretches of lush green grassland, occasionally accompanied by gentle breezes that produce a soothing rustling sound. The sound is so rhythmic, peaceful, and calming; as the grass appears green, so does one’s mood. It is a natural spot to enjoy views of the sea and sunrise. The Mudan Bi Mountain Trail is about 400 meters long, lined with low shrubs such as Hengchun waxberries, jinxuan, myrtles, and white jujube. Calculating with a general walking pace, it takes about 10 minutes to complete the trail, with the only challenge being a slightly steep incline. After reaching the highest point of Mudan Bi Mountain at an elevation of 232 meters, the rest of the journey becomes much easier. The Ecology Trail is around 1,500 meters long and features a variety of beautiful wild plants such as sea camellias, wild magnolias, Hengchun osmanthus, port wood, Taiwan tree orchids, and slender leaf pomelo. Butterflies, insects, and reptiles can often be spotted along the way, making the somewhat longer walk far from boring. At the junction connecting the Prairie Trail and the Mudan Bi Mountain Trail, there is an observation pavilion. Unsurprisingly, this is an excellent viewpoint, with the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out before you, and the beautiful crescent shape of Mudan Bay nearby. The beach is covered with round cobblestones, and there is also the quaint Xuhai Fishing Port and the mysterious Aihai Stone Houses. "Fishing village, ruins, waves, and strange stones" is just another wonderful journey waiting to be explored.
