Xuhai Grassland Introduction

The Xuhai Grassland, also known as the Zhongzheng Grassland, is located in Xuhai Village, Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It is situated on the gentle slopes of Mudanbi Mountain, north of the mouth of the Xuhai River, adjacent to Mudan Bay on the Pacific coast. Covering an area of approximately 80 hectares, it remains a natural landscape area that maintains its original appearance. The scenic area includes three designated walking trails: the Grassland Trail, the Mudanbi Mountain Trail, and the Ecological Trail, each presenting different layers of scenery. The Grassland Trail is approximately 900 meters long, with a low level of difficulty, making it suitable for casual strolls. As the path winds upward, visitors are greeted with expansive green grasslands. Occasionally, a gentle breeze brings the sound of rustling grass, which feels remarkably rhythmic, peaceful, and calming. The lush greenery makes for an ideal spot to enjoy the sea views and sunrise. The Mudanbi Mountain Trail, about 400 meters long, is lined with low shrubs such as Hengchun waxberries, jinguanyin, myrtle, and white-jointed gromwell. It typically takes about 10 minutes to complete at a normal walking pace. The only challenge is a slightly steep ascent, but after reaching the highest point of Mudanbi Mountain at an elevation of 232 meters, the remaining trail becomes much easier. The Ecological Trail is approximately 1,500 meters long and is flanked by a variety of beautiful wild plants, including Haetong, wild camellias, Hengchun sweet osmanthus, port wood, Taiwan orchids, and slender leaf rambutan. Visitors may also see butterflies, insects, and reptiles along the way, making the longer trek enjoyable and not at all tedious. At the intersection connecting the Grassland Trail and the Mudanbi Mountain Trail, there is a viewing pavilion overlooking the ocean. Unsurprisingly, this is an excellent vantage point with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, while Mudan Bay, with its crescent-like curve, lies close by. The beach is covered with rounded pebbles, and nearby is the simple Xuhai Fishing Port and the mysterious stone houses of the "little blacks." “Fishing village, ruins, wave splashing, and strange stones” offer the promise of another beautiful journey.
