Nanwang Tribe Introduction
Nawang Village, belonging to the Puyuma tribe and one of the eight communities of the Beinan people, is located at the northern end of Taitung City, right where Highway 9 enters the Green Tunnel. Upon visiting Nawang Village, you can first explore the century-old Nawang Elementary School. The school is adorned with the traditional patterns of the Beinan tribe on its gates, command platform, colonnades, walls, and even the stones on the campus, exuding a strong essence of Beinan culture. Next to the school is the Puyuma Traditional Cultural Activity Center, which serves as the cultural hub for the entire Nawang Village. The activity center features structures built using traditional techniques, such as the Palakuwan, Takouvan, Kalumaan (ancestral house), observation tower, and wrestling arena. Every July, the Sea Festival and every December, the Great Hunting Festival take place here, making it the best time to observe tribal culture and a prime location for photographers interested in capturing cultural celebrations.
