Nanwang Tribe Introduction
The Nanwang Tribe, belonging to the Puyuma (Pinuyumayan) and one of the eight clans of the Paiwan people, is located at the northern end of Taitung City, right at the point where Provincial Highway No. 9 is about to enter the green tunnel. When visiting the Nanwang Tribe, you can first explore the century-old Nanwang Elementary School. The school features traditional Paiwan patterns painted on the gates, command platforms, colonnades, walls, and even the stones within the campus, exuding a strong Paiwan cultural ambiance. Next to the school is the Puyuma Traditional Cultural Activity Center, which serves as the cultural activity hub for the entire Nanwang Tribe. Inside the Activity Center, you can find traditional constructions such as the Palakuwan (巴拉冠), Takouvan (達古範), Kalumaan (祖靈屋), lookout towers, and wrestling arenas. Every July, the Nanwang Tribe holds a grand sea festival, and in December, a big hunting festival takes place here, making it the best time to observe tribal culture and an ideal location for photographers interested in capturing cultural celebrations.
