Nanwang Tribe Introduction
The Nanwang Tribe, belonging to the Puyuma people and one of the eight communities of the Beinan people, is located at the northern end of Taitung City, right where Highway 9 is about to enter the Green Tunnel. When visiting the Nanwang Tribe, you can first explore the century-old Nanwang Elementary School. The school features traditional patterns of the Beinan people painted on its entrance, commanding platform, columns, walls, and even the stones within the campus, radiating a rich Beinan cultural essence. Next to the school is the Puyuma Traditional Culture Activity Center, which serves as the cultural hub for the entire Nanwang Tribe. Inside the activity center, you will find the traditional structures such as the Palakuwan, Takouvan, Kalumaan, observatory, and wrestling arena built using traditional methods. Every July, the coastal festival of the Nanwang Tribe and the grand hunting festival in December are held here, making it the best time to observe tribal culture and an ideal location for photographers interested in capturing cultural celebrations.
