Shishan Tribe Introduction
Fufeng Tribe is located in the narrow gap between Shitou Mountain and Peinan River at the outskirts of Taitung City, and it is also known as Shishan Tribe because of its proximity to Shitou Mountain. Shishan Tribe refers to the Fufeng Community, which are two names for the same place, situated at the end of the Central Mountain Range and between Peinan River, with the Air Force Zhihang Base located nearby. The original dwelling place of the tribe was at the current Zhihang Base, which caused their relocation due to the base's construction. During the Japanese colonial period, it was called "Shishan," later changed to "Shichuan" in the 35th year of the Republic of China, and subsequently referred to as "Shishan New Village" and "Fufeng Community." The place name originates from the rainwater freely flowing around Shitou Mountain, easily carrying large and small stones downstream, resulting in a riverbed filled with stones, which is evident in the Shichuan waterway going through the Shichuan settlement. Within Shishan Tribe, there is a studio called Meihua Mountain Studio, where the workshop leader, Huang Meihua, is regarded as a master weaver of indigenous LV (Louis Vuitton) style. Here, besides admiring exquisite woven works, you can also try your hand at DIY weaving and unleash your creativity. In addition to promoting weaving, a young man named Wu Dingbao, who lived in Sanyi and practiced wood carving, returned to the tribe and used Han carving techniques to create outstanding works using driftwood. Now, as you pass by Shishan Tribe, you can see many large wooden sculptures standing tall, making it the best promotion for the tribe to the outside world. 【Source: Tribal Backpacker, Fengtai Dong, Tribal Travel Guide】
