Shishan Tribe Introduction
Fufeng Tribe is located in the narrow space between Shitou Mountain and the Peinan River at the outskirts of Taitung City. Due to its proximity to Shitou Mountain, it is also known as Shishan Tribe. Shishan Tribe refers to the Fufeng Community, with both terms pointing to the same place situated between the easternmost part of the Central Mountain Range and the Peinan River, close to the Air Force Zhihang Base. The original settlement of the tribe was on the site of the current Zhihang Base; due to the construction of the base, they were relocated. During the Japanese colonial period, it was called "Shishan," and in 1946, it was renamed "Shichuan," later also known as "Shishan New Village" and "Fufeng Community." The name originates from the rainwater flowing freely in the vicinity of Shitou Mountain, which easily carries stones down the river, leading to a riverbed filled with pebbles, as seen in the Shichuan Channel that runs through the settlement, hence the name. Within Shishan Tribe, there is a studio called Meihua Mountain Workshop, led by Huang Meihua, who is renowned as a weaving master of indigenous designs. Here, visitors can admire exquisite woven works and also participate in DIY weaving experiences to unleash their creativity. In addition to promoting weaving, a young man named Wu Dingbao, who previously lived in Sanyi and worked in wood carving, has returned to the tribe and uses Han carving techniques to create remarkable pieces from driftwood. Now, as you pass by Shishan Tribe, you will see many large wooden sculptures standing outside, which serve as an excellent form of promotion for the tribe. 【Source: Tribe Backpackers Taitung Travel Guide】
