Shihshan Village Introduction
Fufeng Tribe is located in the narrow gap between Shitou Mountain and Beinan River at the outskirts of Taitung City, also known as Shishan Tribe due to its proximity to Shitou Mountain. Shishan Tribe refers to the Fufeng Community; both terms indicate the same place situated between the end of the Central Mountain Range and Beinan River, with the Air Force Zhihang Base just behind it. The original settlement of the tribe was at the current location of Zhihang Base, from which they were relocated due to base construction. It was referred to as "Shishan" during the Japanese colonial period, renamed "Shichuan" in the 35th year of the Republic of China, and later known as "Shishan New Village" and "Fufeng Community." The place name originates from the random flow of rainwater around Shitou Mountain, where the river easily carries stones downstream, resulting in a riverbed filled with rocks, including in the Shichuan irrigation canal through the Shichuan settlement, thus the name. Within Shishan Tribe, there is a studio called Meihua Mountain Workshop, led by Huang Meihua, who is hailed as an indigenous weaving expert comparable to LV. When visiting here, you can not only admire exquisite woven works but also personally experience DIY weaving and unleash your creativity. In addition to promoting weaving, a young man named Wu Dingbao, who previously lived in Sanyi specializing in wood carving, has returned to the tribe and uses Han carving techniques to create outstanding works with driftwood. Presently, while passing by the outside of Shishan Tribe, one can see many large wooden sculptures standing, which have become the best promotion for the tribe to the outside world.
