Zidong Community (Pingxi District Agricultural Association Dongshi Ecological Education Center) Introduction
Zidong Community is located in Dongshi Village, Pingxi District, and is characterized by tea plantations within the rural landscape of northern Taiwan. Due to its location in a valley, the agricultural land is small; however, it boasts rich forest resources and abundant water sources, resulting in a diverse ecological environment. In addition, the community's well-preserved stone houses serve as an important unique resource, with culturally and historically significant attractions like the "Qianzhengkeng Ancient Trail,” the "Dongshi Ecological Education Center" offering gourmet meals and environmental education, and “Chen's Mountain House” and “Dengshan Rongzhuang” which provide hands-on farming product experiences. Visitors can explore ancient trails, visit farms, and connect with nature here. The Dongshi Ecological Education Center is located in Dongshi Village, within the traditional agricultural area of Pingxi District, and serves as a charming "Inner Mountain School" filled with the fragrance of tea and lush greenery surrounded by mountains and flowing water, rich in ecological resources. The center offers venue services, gourmet meals, farming experiences, and environmental education. Chen's Mountain House is situated in the Huo Shao Liao settlement, where coal mining began during the Japanese colonial period and ceased in the 60th year of the Republic of China, with three remnants of mines—Ben Xie Pit, Feng Pit, and New Pit. The Stone Ancient Well is a natural giant pothole created by stream erosion. The host, Sister Lan, embodies the traditional resilience of women, having maintained the farmland for many years and possessing excellent culinary skills. She is now a culinary expert in the community, where visitors can experience the joy of picking fresh vegetables and making pumpkin cakes and rice dumplings. Dengshan Rongzhuang is located in the Fanzi Keng settlement, at the junction of Pingxi and Pinglin, offering stunning views of tea plantations. Mr. Gao Dangshan, the founder, returned to organize the old house in Fanzi Keng at the 85th year of the Republic of China. At the same time, Mr. Gao Mingfu was honored as "Grandfather." To commemorate Gao Dangshan's legacy, it was named Dengshan Rongzhuang, and the story of filial piety will be passed down forever. The ginger and vegetables cultivated at Dengshan Rongzhuang are grown using natural farming methods, aiming to provide safe agricultural products to visitors. Pingxi Agricultural Association provides firefly watching precautions: 1. Fireflies can be observed in many places within Pingxi District. Wear lightweight and comfortable clothing in natural colors and long-sleeved shirts and pants to avoid mosquito bites. Those concerned about mosquitoes can apply mosquito repellent. 2. Wear rain boots or fabric shoes, and do not wear sandals or flip-flops to prevent snake bites. Avoid entering grasslands to prevent encounters with venomous snakes. Be mindful while walking to avoid stepping on frogs or snakes. 3. While watching fireflies, always remind yourself not to scare wild animals and refrain from chasing any wildlife, allowing them to foraging and rest freely.
