Shimen Lover's Temple Introduction
Located above the Fuxi Fishing Port in Shimen District, New Taipei City, the main deity worshipped here is the Love and Fortune Buddha from Tibet. On either side of the main temple, there are a pair of intertwined trees known as the "Couple Trees." Every weekend and holiday, countless worshippers come to seek blessings for love and family harmony. The origin of the Lover's Temple is linked to the two ancient banyan trees next to the temple—referred to as the "Old Tree Man" and "Old Tree Woman." Although they stand on either side of the main temple, their branches are intertwined, creating a remarkable sight known as the Couple Trees or Lover Trees by the faithful. After the establishment of the Lover's Temple, the old temple master Jiang Zhengyi consulted with metaphysics expert Wang Liaojiu and decided to invite the Love and Fortune Buddha, "Gulu Guliefo Mu," from Tibet, China, for worship. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Buddha Mother governs matters of love, couple relationships, family safety, childbirth, legitimate wealth, career, and education, with titles such as the Couple Deity and Love Deity. The Buddha Mother is depicted holding a bow and arrow of love in one hand and a love rope in the other, which is also a distinctive feature. Generally, it is not suitable for couples or married individuals to worship together at typical Lover's Temples, but at the Shimen Lover's Temple, this concern does not exist.
