Water Resources Ecology Education Center Introduction
The Feicui Reservoir is the first large-scale arch dam in Taiwan designed and constructed by local engineers, featuring a double-curvature and variable thickness concrete design. The dam stands 122.5 meters tall and its water storage capacity is second only to the Tsengwen Reservoir. Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1987. The main purpose of the reservoir is to supply tap water to the Taipei area, with additional benefits for power generation. To protect water quality, the reservoir is not open for sightseeing and recreational activities; fishing and water sports are prohibited in the water area. The Water Resource Education Center within the Feicui Reservoir was established in 2003 to promote environmental education, continuously optimizing the hardware and software facilities of the environmental learning center. In terms of hardware, the exhibition hall was redesigned in 2016 to include models of the Feicui Dam and hydrological basins, as well as a green energy experience area. In 2020, a "Feicui Reservoir Smart Navigation System" was implemented, creating a virtual reality (VR) experience for visitors, along with a touchscreen interactive wall displaying information about the entire Xindian River basin. Through immersive projections and interactive teaching methods (such as videos, animations, and explanations), the public can learn about the Xindian River basin. Furthermore, a creative photography area was set up for visitors to take pictures against the unique backdrop of the Feicui Reservoir. In terms of software, three sets of environmental education courses focusing on the five major features of Feicui Reservoir: ecology, green energy, history, safety, and operational management were designed for different age groups to cultivate concepts of water conservation and protection. This aims to enhance the quality of water resource education and environmental education, positioning the reservoir as an excellent venue for environmental education. Reservations must be made in advance through the Taipei Feicui Reservoir Water Resource Education Activity Registration System.
