Water Resources Ecological Education Center Introduction
The Feitsui Reservoir is the first large-scale arch dam in Taiwan designed and constructed by locals, featuring a double-curved, variable thickness concrete structure. The dam stands 122.5 meters tall and its water storage capacity is second only to the Zengwen Reservoir. Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1987. It primarily supplies tap water to the Taipei area and also serves the purpose of hydroelectric power generation. Due to the need to protect the water source quality, the reservoir is not open for tourism and recreation; fishing and water activities are prohibited within the area. The Water Resource Education Center in Feitsui Reservoir was established in 2003 to promote environmental education. Over the years, the center has continually optimized its facilities for environmental learning. In 2016, the exhibition hall's environmental education facilities were redesigned, and additional displays such as the Feitsui Dam and hydrological basin model area, as well as a green energy generation experience zone, were added. In 2020, the "Feitsui Reservoir Smart Guided Tour System" was established, offering a virtual reality (VR) experience of the water area, along with an interactive touchscreen wall for the Xindian River basin. Through immersive projection and interactive teaching (videos, animations, explanatory texts, etc.), the public can learn about the entire Xindian River basin. Additionally, a creative photography studio was set up at the Feitsui Reservoir, allowing rare visitors to take pictures against the reservoir's unique backdrop. On the software side, three sets of environmental education courses have been designed focusing on five key features of the Feitsui Reservoir: ecology, green energy, history, safety, and operational management, catering to different age groups. This aims to instill in the public the concepts of loving, cherishing, and protecting water, as well as further integrating these ideas into their daily lives, thereby enhancing the quality of water resource and environmental education, with the goal of becoming an excellent venue for environmental education. Prior to visiting, members of the public must register for an appointment through the Taipei Feitsui Reservoir Water Resource Education Activity Registration System (click here to proceed).
