Kaohsiung Fengyi Kaizhang Shengwang Temple Introduction

The Kaizhang Shengwang Temple, located on Zhongyi Street in Fengshan, Kaohsiung, was built during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong period and has a history of over two hundred years. It ranks alongside Shuangci Pavilion, Chenghuang Temple, and Longshan Temple as one of the four ancient temples in Fengshan District. The temple primarily enshrines Chen Yuanguang, a功臣 who pacified the southern barbarians during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty. It also features statues of General Ma Ren and General Li Boyao. The colorful paintings of the temple's main door gods are the work of the national treasure-level painter Pan Lishui. Despite undergoing several renovations over the past two hundred years, the temple retains many finely crafted stone carvings. The temple exudes grandiosity and solemnity, preserving a rich, ancient flavor. It is a vital center of faith in the area, drawing devoted worshippers and is one of the largest Kaizhang Shengwang Temples in Taiwan. The expansive plaza outside the temple has become an important venue for various competitive performances and celebratory events such as weddings.
