Xuezitou Sea-eroded Platform Introduction
Located between Xiaochijiao and Chima areas in Xiyu Township, Xuezitou reveals a wide intertidal zone and rocky terrain during low tide, exposed by the changing tides. Numerous tide pool organisms, including a variety of mollusks, can be found on the marine erosion platform, alongside expansive sandy beaches. Xuezitou's marine erosion platform is considered one of the natural secrets of Penghu. The areas of Chixi and Xuezitou in Xiyu Township primarily feature siliceous basalt topography, rich in geological formations of basaltic columnar joints, small craters, and low volcanic craters. Scholars suggest that the Xuezitou marine erosion platform was originally formed by a massive lava lake from a low volcanic crater, which, through marine erosion, has gradually retreated the cliffs from wave action to create a flat rock terrace nearly at sea level. The marine erosion platform is scattered with small, low volcanic craters or vents and features tide pools and potholes formed by seawater erosion. In addition to the unique landforms created by volcanic and erosional activities, the Xuezitou marine erosion platform boasts a vast intertidal zone. The intertidal zone in the waters of Penghu is wide and geologically diverse, covered by seawater at high tide and revealing its features at low tide, fostering a dynamic environment where intertidal organisms thrive due to abundant sunlight. At the Xuezitou marine erosion platform, the extensive intertidal zone allows locals to collect shellfish during low tide, as well as witness hermit crabs and black sea cucumbers. During high tide, the seawater inundates the marine erosion platform, while the adjacent elevated reef area resembles an isolated island, consisting of small interconnected coral rubble islets. Typically, during low tide, this elevated reef area transforms into an angler's paradise, as its complex and profound underwater terrain often harbors a rich diversity of aquatic plants and animals, providing an excellent feeding and spawning ground for fish, resulting in abundant fishing resources. When visiting the seldom-visited Xuezitou, one can experience the unique marine erosion platform and the rich biodiversity of the intertidal zone. This place also serves as a great spot for wave watching. Strolling along the sandy beach to admire the endless ocean and sky, one feels as if the world has been reduced to the sounds of the tides and one's heartbeat, allowing for a moment of tranquil escape from worldly troubles. 【Suggested stay time】1 hour
