Xueziwei Sea-eroded Platform Introduction
Located between Xiaochijiao and Chima areas in Xiyu Township, Xuezaigang reveals a wide and expansive intertidal zone and rocky terrain during low tide due to the changing tides. On the wave-cut platform, a large number of intertidal organisms such as mollusks can be found; alongside it, there is a large sandy beach. The wave-cut platform of Xuezaigang is one of the natural secrets of Penghu. The area around Chixi and Xuezaigang in Xiyu Township primarily consists of silicic basalt terrain, which not only develops basalt columnar joints but is also rich in small volcanic craters and flat volcanoes. It is speculated by scholars that the Xuezaigang wave-cut platform was originally formed from a large lava lake in a flat volcanic crater; through marine erosion, waves erode the sea cliffs, causing the cliffs to gradually retreat and form a flat rock platform that is nearly at the same height as the sea surface. The wave-cut platform is dotted with small flat volcanic craters or vents, as well as tidal pools and potholes formed by marine erosion. In addition to the unique geomorphological features created by volcanic and erosion processes, the Xuezaigang wave-cut platform also has a vast intertidal zone. The intertidal zone in the waters of Penghu is wide and geologically diverse; during high tide, the seawater covers it, and during low tide, the terrain is revealed. The alternating wet and dry tidal waters, combined with the abundant sunshine in Penghu, contribute to the diversity and richness of intertidal life. The expansive intertidal zone at Xuezaigang allows local residents to come and collect shellfish during low tide, and one can also observe creatures like hermit crabs and black sea cucumbers. During high tide, the seawater submerges the wave-cut platform, while the uplifted rocky area nearby resembles a small island connected by coral debris. During low tide, this uplifted rocky area becomes a paradise for anglers, as the underwater topography is complex and deep, often harboring a rich variety of aquatic plants and animals. It serves as an excellent spot for fish to forage and spawn, making fish resources very abundant. When visiting the remote area of Xuezaigang, in addition to experiencing the unique wave-cut platform and the rich biodiversity of the intertidal zone, it is also a great place to observe the waves.
