Xueziwei Sea Erosion Platform Introduction
Located between Xiaochijiao and Chima areas in Xiyu Township, Xuezaiwei features a wide and expansive intertidal zone and rocky terrain that emerges during low tide with the changing tides. On the wave-eroded platform, a variety of intertidal creatures, such as shells, can be found; nearby, there are extensive sandy beaches. The Xuezaiwei wave-eroded platform is one of the natural secrets of Penghu. The area around Chixi and Xuezaiwei in Xiyu Township primarily consists of siliceous basalt terrain, which not only develops basalt columnar joints but also abounds with small craters and flat volcanoes. Scholars speculate that the Xuezaiwei wave-eroded platform was originally formed from a large lava lake of a broad, flat volcanic crater. Through the process of wave erosion, the cliffs are gradually worn away, creating a flat rock platform that is nearly the same height as the sea surface. Scattered across the wave-eroded platform are small flat craters or geysers, as well as tide pools, potholes, and other formations resulting from seawater erosion. In addition to the unique geological formations created by volcanic and wave actions, the Xuezaiwei wave-eroded platform also features a vast intertidal zone. The intertidal zone in the waters of Penghu is wide and geologically diverse. When the tide rises, the seawater covers the area, and when it recedes, the landforms are exposed. The alternating cycles of wet and dry tides, combined with the ample sunlight in Penghu, contribute to a diverse and thriving range of intertidal organisms. During low tide at the Xuezaiwei wave-eroded platform, local residents can be seen collecting shells, and various creatures like hermit crabs and black sea cucumbers can also be observed. During high tide, the seawater inundates the wave-eroded platform, and the adjacent raised rocky area appears as an island, connected by coral debris. At low tide, this elevated rocky area becomes a paradise for anglers, as the underwater terrain is complex and deep, often containing a rich variety of aquatic flora and fauna, making it an excellent place for fish to forage and spawn. Thus, the fish resources here are very abundant. Visiting the secluded Xuezaiwei not only allows you to experience the unique wave-eroded platform and diverse intertidal life but also offers a wonderful spot for wave watching. Walking along the sandy beach, you can admire the limitless views of the sea and sky, while the world seems to consist only of the sound of the waves and your own heartbeat, providing a tranquil respite from worldly concerns. **Recommended stay time:** 1 hour
