Old Banyan Tree of Gangzi Introduction
The Old Banyan Tree in Gangzi is located in Gangzi Village, Baisha, Penghu, along Route 203, at the intersection leading to the Penghu Aquarium, right next to the Baoding Temple. In addition to the ancient banyan tree, on the way north to the loop, before entering the Penghu Aquarium, there is also a banyan forest with its own stories. There is a banyan tree on each side of the Baoding Temple, providing a wide canopy. Due to the strong northeast monsoon in Penghu, the trees do not grow tall but spread outwards. The aerial roots of the banyan tree intertwine and climb on concrete supports, becoming very dense. The aerial roots descend deep into the ground and grow into new pillars, over time forming a natural shade barrier. Underneath the large tree, there are benches and reclining chairs, making it a great place to chat and cool off. When passing through, one can take a break and pray here. This banyan tree was likely planted during the Qing Dynasty and is over a hundred years old, making it the second oldest banyan tree in Penghu. With one tree on each side, it is also known as the "Lovers' Tree." The two banyan trees embrace the temple, as if shielding Baoding Temple from wind and rain, and it is a good spot for village elders to play chess and children to play around, as well as a place for casual conversations. [Recommended stay time] 0.5 hours.
The lush banyan trees climbing the support structures resemble the Baoding Palace.
