Fang Ssu-Wen Memorial Park Introduction
The Fang Si-Wen Memorial Park and Si-Wen Pavilion along the Pangbawa Tunnel section are dedicated to honoring the contributions of Master Fang, a scholar from our county. He dedicated his life to public service, the community, and society, serving as a model for future generations. The county government specially awarded a certificate of commendation in February of the 90th year of the Republic, recognizing his immortal achievements. At the suggestion of the villagers of Baisha, then-County Magistrate Lai established the "Fang Si-Wen Memorial Park" to commemorate his lifelong contributions, expressing the local community's everlasting remembrance and gratitude to the Confucian scholar Fang Si-Wen. In the park, there is a statue of Mr. Fang, created through a collaboration between sculptors Wu An-Zhai and Guo Qing-Yun. Behind the statue, Guo Qing-Yun inscribed "The Life Achievements of the Confucian Scholar Fang Si-Wen," which states: Mr. Fang was born in the 6th year of the Republic (1917) and lived in Wadung Village, Penghu County. From a young age, he displayed remarkable talent. At the age of eight, he studied for thirteen years under the Qing scholar Xu Ling-Yun, diligently learning the Four Books and Five Classics while honing his literary skills. In his youth, newlywed and undeterred by the oppressive power of the Japanese, he crossed the sea alone to teach for nine years on Dachang and Yuanbei Islands, promoting Chinese culture. After the restoration of Taiwan, he continued teaching history and Confucian studies at Baisha High School, soon transitioning to serve as the head of the cultural section at Baisha Township Office, as well as curriculum head in civil affairs and finance, and secretary of the village representative assembly for thirty-eight years, happily engaging with the community until his retirement. Even after retirement, he continued to serve the public through ceremonial duties, geomancy services, temple inscriptions, poem annotations, and teaching Confucianism. He also served as a committee member for county literature, election duties, Confucius memorial ceremonies, and mourning rituals, meticulously writing about the history of Penghu and contributions to cultural heritage. He was once honored as a model father in the county and recognized as a model elder nationwide. In January of the 90th year of the Republic, Mr. Fang passed away suddenly at the age of 85. He devoted his life's efforts to serving the community and left behind a legacy filled with memories and profound reflections. It was suggested by the Wadung Village Assembly that the government construct a memorial park in his honor. The statue was created by the renowned sculptor Guo Qing-Yun, and jointly funded by Wu An-Zhai and Guo Qing-Yun. This serves as a testament to his exemplary conduct and will forever inspire future generations. The coastal highway offers beautiful sea views, and the park is located at a high point, with the pavilion perched above, providing a wide vista. Here, visitors can overlook Houliao's coastline, Wadung Harbor, Magong City, and Dachang Island while enjoying the serene inner sea scenery. In the "Fang Si-Wen Memorial Park," one can observe the rising tides, gaze towards the coastline of Xiyu and Dachang Islet, and watch the tidal flats exposed during low tide, where women can be seen scattering along the shore picking up shells, among the winding seascapes, all of which invite a moment of appreciation. 【Recommended stay time】 0.5 hours
