Fang Ssu-wen Memorial Park Introduction
On the coastal section of the Pengbawan Tunnel lies the Fang Si-wen Memorial Park and Si-wen Pavilion, established to commemorate Mr. Fang, a master of Chinese literature in the county, for his contributions to the local community. He dedicated his life to public service, the community, and various social endeavors, serving as a lasting model for future generations. In February of 2001, the county government awarded him a commendation to honor his immortal achievements. At the suggestion of the villagers of Baisha, then County Mayor Lai initiated the establishment of the "Fang Si-wen Memorial Park" to express the community's eternal remembrance and gratitude for Mr. Fang's lifelong contributions. Inside the park, there is a statue of Mr. Fang, created in collaboration between sculptors Wu An-zhai and Guo Qing-yun. On the back of the statue, Guo inscribed "The life achievements of the Chinese Studies Master Fang Si-wen." The inscription reads: Mr. Fang Si-wen was born in the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917) in Wadung Village, Penghu County, and exhibited remarkable intelligence from a young age. At eight, he began studying under the Qing dynasty scholar Xu Ling-yun for thirteen years, diligently learning the Four Books and Five Classics, refining his literary skills. In his youth, newly married and undaunted by Japanese oppression, he braved the waves to teach on the islands of Dazhong and Yuanbei for nine years, promoting Chinese culture. After the restoration of Taiwan, he continued to serve as a history and Chinese studies teacher at Baisha Junior High School, then quickly transitioned to various positions including Director of Culture at the Baisha Township Office, and Secretary of the Township Representative Assembly, serving for a total of thirty-eight years, contributing to the community until his honorable retirement. Even after retirement, he continued to serve the public in various roles, including etiquette, geomancy service, writing temple epitaphs, annotating poetry, and imparting Chinese studies. He was also a member of the county's historical records, election affairs, Confucius ceremonies, and funeral etiquette committees, meticulously penning historical narratives of Penghu and making significant contributions to cultural heritage. He was recognized as a model father in the county and honored nationally as a model elder. In January 2001, Mr. Fang passed away suddenly at the age of eighty-five. He dedicated his life to serving the community with his profound knowledge, leaving behind a lasting legacy for future generations to cherish and contemplate. Following the suggestions of the villagers of Wadung, the government built the memorial park. The statue of Mr. Fang was sculpted by the renowned artist Guo Qing-yun, with contributions from Wu An-zhai and Guo Qing-yun. This coastal highway features beautiful seascape views, and the park is situated at a high point, with the pavilion perched on an elevated area providing expansive vistas. From here, visitors can overlook the coastline of Hou Liao, Wadung Harbor, Magong City, and Dazhong Island, enjoying the serene beauty of the inland sea. In the grounds of "Fang Si-wen Memorial Park", one can watch the tidal waters rise, gaze at the coast of Xiyu and Dazhong Island, observe the exposed intertidal zones during low tide, and see women scattered along the shore collecting shells. The winding seascapes present many charming sights worth pausing to admire. [Recommended stay time] 0.5 hours
